Sophomores lead harriers at pre-nationals

Career-best times by sophomores Mackenzie Dye (New Castle, Ind.) and Logan Wells (Scottsburg, Ind.) led the Hanover College Cross Country teams at the NCAA Division III Pre-National Meet.

The meet was held Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Laverne Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Dye covered the women's six-kilometer course in 23:54.1, placing 68th and turning in the eighth-best time in Hanover history, moving classmate Claire Hinshaw (New Castle, Ind.) to ninth.

Hinshaw ran second for the Panthers, placing 104th overall in a time of 24:37.2.

A trio of freshmen rounded out Hanover's scoring in their debut race at the six-kilometer distance.

Rachel Smith (Brownsburg, Ind.) ran 24:54.1 to place 114th. Kaleigh DeBeck followed closely behind in 117th, running 25:04.1. Nikki Lewis (Mahomet, Ill.) finished 146th, running 25:40.3, to help the Panthers finish 20th overall.

Johns Hopkins University (Md.) won the meet with 52 points.

Led by Wells’s personal-best 27:13.5-effort, Hanover's men's team had its strongest race of the season, enjoying a 1:22 gap among the five scoring athletes.

Junior Brendan Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) ran a season-best 28:0.2 to finish 152th overall.

Freshmen Drew Elston (Carmel, Ind.) and Ben Franke (Seymour, Ind.) finished within nine seconds of each other, placing 164th and 167th, respectively. Elston ran 18:14. 3, while Franke ran 28:23.2.

Junior Jason Holcomb (Sellersburg, Ind.) completed the team's score, finishing in 174th place in 28:35.0.

DePauw University’s Noah Droddy completed the course in 25:13.7 to take top honors.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Calif.) won the men's meet with 77 points. Hanover scored 750.
