The Hanover College cross country teams ended the regular-season schedule in record fashion, setting multiple personal- and season-best times at the Wilmington College (Ohio) Fall Classic. The meet was held Friday, Oct. 12, in Wilmington, Ohio.
All five Hanover scorers in the men's race ran personal bests, as the Panthers totaled 446 points to place 14th overall.
Sophomore Logan Wells (Scottsburg, Ind.) ran a personal-best time for the second straight week. His 41st-place time of 26:12.44 is also the 18th-fastest time in Hanover history. Wells is the first Panther male to make the list since Paul Breitenstein in 2004.
Freshman Drew Elston (Carmel, Ind.) followed Wells in 83rd place with a 26:57.41 effort.
Juniors Jason Holcomb (Sellersburg, Ind.) and Brendan Kelly (Indianapolis, Ind.) ran together for most of the race, finishing 127th and 144th, respectively, with times of 27:33.06 and 27:44.76.
In just his third race, freshman Ben Franke (Seymour, Ind.) completed Hanover's scoring, running a personal-best 28:06.11 to finish 172nd.
Ashland University (Ohio) scored 28 points to win the invitational. Their top runner, Brian Baum, finished the eight-kilometer course in 24:56.24.
A strong team effort paced Hanover's women's team, as four Panthers covered the five-kilometer course in fewer than 20 minutes, while two more finished in less than 21 minutes.
Hanover scored 263 point to place ninth overall in the 33-team invitational and third among NCAA Division III schools. Ashland claimed the team title with 82 points.
Sophomore Mackenzie Dye (New Castle, Ind.) earned all-meet honors, placing 33rd in 19:36.66.
Freshman Kaleigh DeBeck (Cromwell, Ind.) finished closely behind, placing 43rd in a time of 19:44.72. Her time is a career-best and ties for 16th on the Hanover all-time list.
Claire Hinshaw (New Castle, Ind.), a sophomore, placed four spots behind DeBeck in a career-best 19:50.97, while freshman Rachel Smith (Brownsburg, Ind) was the fourth Panther to finish in less than 20 minutes. Smith’s 19:56.63 effort is her fastest this season.
Junior Janelle Lantz (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman Nikki Lewis (Mahomet, Ill.) ran neck and neck the whole race, finishing alongside one another, as both turned in their fastest times this season. Lantz edged Lewis to complete the Hanover scoring, running 20:50.23 to 20:50.66. The pair finished 113th and 115th.
Lindsay Wilson’s Sharon Rono won the meet in a course-record time of 17:11.45.
