Panthers secure tourney ticket with shutout

Hanover College’s women’s soccer squad secured a spot in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-0 triumph against Defiance College (Ohio). The Panthers’ final regular-season match was played Saturday, Oct. 27, in Defiance, Ohio.

With the win, Hanover earns the No. 3 seed in the Heartland Conference’s four-team post-season tournament. The Panthers will play at No. 2 Transylvania University (Ky.), Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Lexington, Ky.

Hanover scored early, then added two goals in the final 30 minutes to seal the squad’s 13th win of the season. The effort matches the second-highest victory total in school history (13-5-1 in 2009).

Freshman midfielder Autry Graham (Versailles, Ky.) headed a corner kick from junior forward Paige Byers (Noblesville, Ind.) into the net to put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the 12th minute.

Hanover outfired the Yellow Jackets 25-7 in the match, but were kept out of the net until the 71st minute when freshman forward Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio)  dented the lower right corner for an insurance goal.

Senior forward Jennie Dumaine (California, Ky.) punched a rebound into the goal in the 88th minute for the final margin.

Senior defender Shannon Grueter (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Panthers’ offensive effort with five shots. Graham, who netted her second goal of the season, had three shots, while Byers had three of Hanover’s 12 shots on goal.

Senior goaltender Bethann Hancock (Lexington, Ky.) posted three saves.

Hanover, now 13-4-1 overall, is 6-2-1 in the Heartland Conference.
Defiance, meanwhile, closes its season 9-6-4 overall and 4-3-2 in the league.
