The Hanover College women’s basketball team lost to the University of Redlands (Calif.), 90-74, in the second game of the Panthers' pre-holiday swing through Southern California. The contest was held Wednesday, Dec. 19, in Redlands, Calif.
Senior forward Courtney Prater (Anderson, Ind.) posted game highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Hanover. Junior forward Elyse Weddle (Bloomfield, Ind.) had 13 points and sophomore guard Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) added 10 for the Panthers (6-3).
Allison Wong scored 20 points to lead four Redlands players in double figures. Brittany Oster added 17 points and nine boards for the Bulldogs (7-3).
Hopkins hit a pair of shots from outside as Redlands nursed an 8-7 lead in the opening five minutes. The Bulldogs, behind four three-pointers, went on a 20-5 run during a five-minute span to grab a 28-12 lead midway through the first period.
Redlands eventually expanded the lead to 21 points (49-28) in the final minute of the half and led 49-30 at the break.
Prater opened the second period with three straight buckets and sophomore guard Caitlin Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind.) later added three from outside, including two three-pointers, as Hanover charged within 67-55 with 10 minutes left in the game.
The Panthers were hampered by a cold spell during a key seven-minute stretch late in the second half. The squad hit just one field goal during the span and relied on nine free throws to remain in the hunt.
Hanover pulled within 73-62 after a Bischoff free throw with 6:37 to go. Redlands, however, countered with an 8-2 run in the following three minutes to build an 81-64 cushion and seal the win.
Hanover was 25-of-75 from the floor (33.3%) and converted 19-of-23 free throws (86.2%).
The Panthers earned a 49-38 advantage on the glass, including 23 offensive rebounds. Freshman guard Stephanie Pahren (Metamora, Ind.) pulled down a season-high nine boards to support the effort.
