Hanover College’s baseball squad lost to Augustana College (Ill.), 4-2, Monday, Feb. 25, in Auburndale, Fla.
Augustana (4-0) used six hits and an error to build a 4-0 lead after four innings. Hanover plated a run in the fifth inning and another in the seventh to cut the margin in half, but slipped to 1-2 this season with the setback.
Senior centerfielder Kevin Sears (Noblesville, Ind.) doubled to lead off the fifth and later scored after a pair of groundouts.
Sophomore designated hitter Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) earned a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning. He eventually moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a double off the bat of sophomore second baseman Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.).
Hanover totaled eight hits in the game, and drew six walks, but stranded 13 runners. Newman led the Panthers’ work at the plate with three hits, including a run-batted-in, while Sears had a pair of singles.
Sophomore hurler Clint Jones (Bloomington, Ind.) was pinned with the loss after allowing five hits and four earned runs in three and two-thirds innings on the mound.
Sophomore Alex Lantz (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshman Matt Powers (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) combined for four and one-third innings of three-hit, scoreless relief.
