Hanover’s College’s men’s lacrosse squad outscored Rhodes College (Tenn.), 6-1, in the second half, but fell short in a 10-8 loss to the Lynx, Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Memphis, Tenn.
Trailing 9-2 at the intermission, Hanover scored three times in the third quarter to trim the margin to 10-5. The Panthers netted three goals to eventually pull within 10-8 with two minutes left in the contest, but were able to generate just one shot down the stretch.
Sophomore attacker Nick Hermes (Grayslake, Ill.) had two goals and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Luke Karnick (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored twice to lead Hanover’s offense. The Panthers piled up 50 shots in the setback, coming just three attempts from matching the school mark for shots in a game (53).
Junior attacker Chris Baney (Lexington, Ky.), freshman midfielder Angelo Butturi (Evansville, Ind.), junior midfielder Zac Cheatle (Fox River Grove, Ill.) and sophomore attacker Matt Weber (Centerville, Ohio) each tallied goals for Hanover, now 0-2 this season.
Rhodes (1-3) scored the first four goals of the contest before Baney put the Panthers on the scoreboard with five minutes left in the first period.
The Lynx added a goal later in the stanza to build a 5-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play.
Rhodes increased the lead to 8-1 prior to Karnick connecting with five minutes left in the half. The Lynx added a goal in the final 30 seconds of the period to earn the 9-2 advantage at the break.
Rhodes nudged the lead to 10-2 just three seconds into the third quarter, then Hanover mounted its comeback effort.
Hermes scored with 7:23 left in the frame and Karnick followed shortly with his second of the match. Weber, off an assist from freshman attacker Mike Gordon (Fishers, Ind.), netted a goal with only five seconds left in the period to cut the deficit in half (10-5).
The Panthers had three cracks at the net before Hermes fed Butturi for a goal with 9:20 on the clock. Hermes then added his second goal of the contest off a pass from freshman defender Stephen Farrow (Buckner, Ky.) with three minutes to go.
Cheatle, with an assist from Weber, scored with 2:21 remaining for the final margin.
Hanover outshot the Lynx, 50-35, including 29-18 in shots on goal. Karnick led the attack with 11 shots.
Sophomore goalie Addison Sears (Louisville, Ky.) allowed nine goals with three saves in the first half. Sophomore Austin Czisny (Gurnee, Ill.) relieved in the third period and surrendered one goal while posting five saves the rest of the way.
The teams split 22 face-offs and the Panthers had a 52-48 edge in ground balls.
Sophomore midfielder Tim Gruber (Cincinnati, Ohio) won all six of his face-offs.
Junior midfielder Derek Coe (Lake Orion, Mich.) collected six ground balls to lead Hanover’s recovery effort. Junior defender Sam Kampert (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman attacker Justin Winkler (Goshen, Ky.) each had five.
