Eighth-inning rally clips Spalding in slugfest

Hanover College’s baseball squad scored five runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 12-8 victory against Spalding University (Ky.), Thursday, March 7, in Louisville, Ky.

Trailing 8-7 in the eighth, Hanover loaded the bases with no outs. The Panthers pushed one run across the plate at a time with two singles, a double and a pair of sacrifice flies.

Senior outfielder Kevin Sears (Noblesville, Ind.) had a bunt single to score the innings' first run. Senior outfielder Cam Ginder (Huntertown, Ind.) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly; sophomore shortstop Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio) swatted a run-scoring double; sophomore third baseman Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.) looped a single to push the tying run across the plate and freshman designated hitter Chris Ares (Versailles, Ky.) plated the eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Panthers (5-3) totaled 12 hits in the contest with five players collecting two or more. Newman led the attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and three runs-batted-in. Sophomore first baseman Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) was 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Sears, Johns and junior outfielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.) each had two hits.

Senior right-hander Rob Wohlschlaeger (Sheridan, Ind.) picked up his second win of the season with one and one-third innings of scoreless relief.

Wohlschlaeger (2-1), the fourth of five Hanover pitchers, entered with two outs in the seventh inning. He allowed two hits with a strikeout.

Junior closer Chip Hockenbury (Elizabeth, Ind.) worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Spalding, which had won its first six games this season, jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Hanover countered with four to pull within 5-4 after three innings.

Brooks smacked a bases-loaded double to fuel the burst.

The teams were tied a 6-6 after five innings and 7-7 after six frames.

The Golden Eagles (6-1) eased ahead 8-7 in the seventh on an infield error with the bases loaded.
