Winning streak halted at Centre

Hanover College’s baseball team dropped two non-conference games on the road at Centre College (Ky.), Saturday, March 9, in Danville, Ky.

Hanover’s three-game winning streak came to a halt with a 2-1 setback in the opener. The Panthers fell 11-6 in the second game.

Junior pitcher Mitch Hunnicutt (Seymour, Ind.) suffered the loss in the first game despite limiting Centre to just three hits through six and one-third innings.

Senior outfielder Kevin sears (Noblesville, Ind.) led off the game with a double and later scored on a two-base hit by sophomore shortstop Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio) to give Hanover an early 1-0 lead.

Hunnicutt (1-1) allowed only two hits and kept the Colonels off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. A lead-off double, followed by a sacrifice and an infield grounder, eventually pushed the game-tying run across the plate.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hunnicutt issued a walk to lead off the inning. The runner eventually moved to third after a sacrifice and wild pitch.

Junior closer Chip Hockenbury (Elizabeth, Ind.), who entered with the bases loaded, induced an infielder grounder, but it was enough to force home the game-winning run.

The Panthers’ offense generated nine hits, but stranded seven base runners and hit into two double plays.

Sears, Johns and junior outfielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.) each had two hits to lead Hanover’s effort at the plate.

Sophomore first baseman Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) had a run-scoring single in the inning, while senior outfielder Cam Ginder (Huntertown, Ind.) and freshman designated hitter Chris Ares (Versailles, Ky.) each pushed runs across the plate with bases-loaded walks.

Sears led off the fifth inning with a two-base hit and scored on a single by sophomore third baseman Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.).
