Hanover College’s softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Westminster College (Mo.), Friday, March 22, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover, now 3-9 this season, captured the first game, 2-1, and blanked Westminster in the nightcap, 7-0.
The Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the 2-1 victory in the opener.
Freshman Allison Arnold (Fort Wayne, Ind.) poked a pinch-hit single up the middle with one out in the seventh. Sophomore rightfielder Chelsie Nuhring (Lynnville, Ind.) followed with a double to push Arnold’s tying run across the plate and advanced to third on the throw home.
Freshman centerfielder Paige Starling (Moorsville, Ind.) slapped a grounder to the left side of the infield and a sliding Nuhring dislodged the throw and tapped the plate for the game-winner.
Sophomore hurler Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run while recording her first win of the season (1-4). Davidson issued one walk and tallied three strikeouts.
Sophomore shortstop Danielle Merrick (Eminence, Ind.) had two base hits among the Panthers’ six hits.
In the second contest, sophomore pitcher Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind.) surrendered just two hits and fanned nine while recording her first collegiate shutout.
Kemmerer (2-2) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning and had just one runner move into scoring position through the other six innings.
Hanover scored one run in each of the second, third and fourth frames. The Panthers wrestled control of the game with a four-run fifth inning.
Merrick collected four of Hanover’s nine hits, including two doubles. She also scored a run and knocked in one run in the fourth.
Kemmerer had two hits and one run-batted-in. Freshman leftfielder Lyndsea Burke (Modoc, Ind.) had two RBI, while Arnold and Nuhring each scored a pair of runs.
Westminster slipped to 1-3 on the season with the losses.
