Hanover College’s baseball squad opened its 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a 3-2 loss in 10 innings to Defiance College (Ohio). The contest was played Friday, March 22, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover built a 2-0 lead after six innings. Defiance, playing as the home team in the series, rallied with one run in the seventh and another in the bottom of the ninth knot the game at 2-2.
The Panthers were retired in order in the top of the 10th before Defiance (7-3; 1-0 HCAC) loaded the bases with an infield error and two walks in the bottom half of the inning. A wild pitch allowed the game-winner to cross the plate.
Junior pitcher Chip Hockenbury (Elizabeth, Ind.) was tagged with the loss after allowing two hits and a pair of runs in one and two-third innings of relief.
Junior Mitch Hunnicutt (Seymour, Ind.), the first of five Hanover pitchers, scattered four hits and gave up one run through the first six innings.
Hanover (7-7; 0-1 HCAC) totaled eight hits, while Defiance had seven hits and left 13 runners on base.
Junior second baseman Zach Shultz (Greenwood, Ind.), senior centerfielder Kevin Sears (Noblesville, Ind.) and junior leftfielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.) had two hits apiece to lead the Panthers’ effort at the plate.
Chapman knocked in a run with a fifth-inning triple. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) had a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Sears and Shultz each scored a run.
