Tennis opens HCAC slate with narrow loss

Hanover College’s men’s tennis team opened its 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a 5-4 loss to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The HCAC match was held Saturday, March 23, at the Zeddies Tennis Center.

Rose-Hulman (2-5; 1-2) posted wins in two of the three doubles matches before the squads split the six singles matches.

Senior Steven Gilliam (Fishers, Ind.), junior Jordan Myers (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Brian Clark (New Palestine, Ind.) each notched singles victories for Hanover (0-8; 0-1 HCAC).

Gilliam defeated Rose-Hulman’s Ben Para, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1. Clark handled Nate Moore, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), at No. 3, while Myers held off the Engineers’ Ray Montgomery, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 6.

Gilliam paired with freshman Andrew Nice (Salem, Ind.) for an 8-6 win against Moore and Matthew Conrad at No. 2 doubles.
