The Hanover College softball team split a doubleheader at Defiance College (Ohio) to open its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate. The games were played Saturday, March 30, in Defiance, Ohio.
Hanover increased its winning streak to five games with a 5-3 triumph in the first contest. The string marked the Panthers’ longest since five consecutive wins from March 16-22 during the 2003 season.
Defiance rebounded for a 9-4 win in the second game.
In the opener, Defiance led 2-0 after four innings before Hanover scored twice in the fifth to knot the game at 2-2. The Panthers added three runs on four hits in the seventh to build a 5-2 cushion. The Yellow Jackets put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but could push just one across the plate.
Hanover totaled 13 hits in the contest. Freshman leftfielder Lyndsea Burke (Modoc, Ind.) was 3-for-4, while sophomore pitcher Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind.) and sophomore second baseman Megan Caudill (Richmond, Ind.) had two hits apiece.
Kemmerer notched her fourth win of the season (4-2) with seven innings in the circle. She scattered eight hits and three runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Hanover totaled 10 hits in the second contest, but left 12 runners on base and committed six fielding errors in the 9-4 setback.
Defiance led 5-1 after three innings, but the Panthers scored twice in the top of the fourth to pull within 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets (8-8; 2-2 HCAC) answered with two in the bottom of the fourth to nudge the margin to 7-3, then added two more in the fifth to dispatch any potential rally.
Burke and sophomore shortstop Danielle Merrick (Eminence, Ind.) had two hits apiece for Hanover (6-10; 1-1 HCAC).
Burke had a pair of singles and scored the Panthers' run in the first inning. Merrick knocked in two runs with a fourth-inning double.
Sophomore hurler Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) worked the first five innings. Davidson (1-5) was tagged for 11 hits and nine runs, though only one run was earned. She issued one walked and fanned two.
