Senior Steven Gilliam (Fishers, Ind.) and sophomore Briahna Chambers (Bell, Texas) have been recognized as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s athlete of the week in their respective sports.
Gilliam was named the HCAC’s men’s tennis player of the week after leading Hanover to a pair of conference victories last week.
Playing in the No. 1 singles slot, Gilliam defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph’s Clayton Steinriede, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the Panthers to an 8-1 victory, March 28, at the Zeddies Tennis Center. He followed with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, win against Manchester University’s Kyle Lahman in Hanover’s 8-1 home triumph March 30.
Gilliam has won his last five matches and stands at 6-4 at No. 1 singles this season. He is 3-0 in league matches.
Chambers was named the Heartland Conference’s women’s track athlete of the week after propelling Hanover’s women’s team to the title at the Hanover Invitational, March 30.
Chambers won the 100 meters and 200 meters, as well as anchored the Panthers’ 4x100-meter relay, which posted a first-place finish in a school-record time.
She covered the 100 meters in 12.83 seconds to win the event by nearly one second and was first in the 200 in 26.33 seconds.
Chambers also teamed with senior Krystal Nugent (Lake Village, Ind.), senior Lexi Vincz (Greenfield, Ind.) and sophomore Jordan Moseby (Indianapolis, Ind.) to win the 4x100-meter relay in a school and meet record 49.30 seconds.
