Baseball falls in slugfest at Franklin

Hanover College’s baseball squad lost to Franklin College, 22-11, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slugfest, Tuesday, April 9, in Franklin, Ind.

The Panthers and Grizzlies combined for 35 hits, including 12 extra-base hits, in the highest-scoring game in the league this season.

Franklin (12-12; 5-6 HCAC) jumped out to an 8-1 lead after three innings. Hanover cut the margin to 8-7 with two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth.

In the fourth, senior third baseman Trent McIninch (Greenwood, Ind.) hit a two-out double to score one run and senior rightfielder Cam Ginder (Huntertown, Ind.) followed with a run-scoring single.

The Panthers (14-10; 7-4 HCAC) scored four runs on four hits and an error in the fifth inning.

Senior centerfielder Kevin Sears (Noblesville, Ind.) smacked a two-run double into right field. McIninch and junior left fielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.) each knocked in runs with hits into the outfield later in the inning.

Franklin, which hit six homers in the contest, pulled away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Freshman hurler Nick Brunner (North Vernon, Ind.) was tagged with the loss after two and two-thirds innings on the mound. Brunner (0-2), the first of six Hanover pitchers, surrendered nine hits and eight earned runs.

McIninch, sophomore shortstop Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore first baseman Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) had two hits apiece for the Panthers, which totaled 12 in the game.

McIninch was 2-for-4 with a double, three runs-batted-in and one scored. Johns was 2-for-5 and scored a run. Brooks was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Sophomore designated hitter Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.) scored three runs. He had just one hit, but also walked and was hit by a pitch.

The 33 combined runs are the most in a Heartland Conference game since April 7, 2012 (34). Anderson University defeated Hanover, 18-16, in an outing that also featured 35 hits.
