Hanover College’s baseball team capped a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Anderson University with two losses. The twinbill was played Saturday, April 20, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover dropped the first game, 13-4. The Panthers fell in the second contest, 4-1.
In the opener, Anderson raced to a 5-1 lead after three innings. The Ravens stretched the margin to 13-3 with three runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth.
Hanover, which totaled 11 hits in the game, scored one run in the third inning on a base hit from senior centerfielder Kevin Sears (Noblesville, Ind.). The Panthers plated two runs in the fifth when senior first baseman Ryan Grau (Cincinnati, Ohio) swatted a bases-loaded single.
Junior leftfielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.), sophomore shortstop Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore second baseman Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.) and freshman rightfielder Chris Ares (Versailles, Ky.) collected two hits apiece.
Junior pitcher Andrew Roby (Shepherdsville, Ky.) was dealt the loss after working five innings on the mound. Roby (5-3) gave up 10 hits and eight runs.
The squads battled through four scoreless innings in the second contest before Anderson (18-15; 12-6 HCAC) ended the drought with a run in the fifth. The Ravens extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Hanover (14-16; 7-10 HCAC) scored in the bottom half of the seventh for the final tally. Freshman catcher Daniel Campbell (North Vernon, Ind.) led off the Panthers’ seventh with his second triple of the season. He later scored on a wild pitch.
Newman had two of Hanover’s seven hits, including his team-leading 13th double of the season.
Senior Rob Wohlschlaeger (Sheridan, Ind.) tossed the first six innings for the Panthers. Wohlschlaeger (3-2) allowed five hits and a run with a walk and one strikeout.
