For the second week in a row, sophomore Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind.), senior Emily Boyd (Indianapolis, Ind.) and sophomore Briahna Chambers (Bell, Texas) have been recognized as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s athlete of the week in their respective sports.
Kemmerer (8-4) was named the Heartland Conference’s softball pitcher of the week after tossing a six-inning complete-game one-hitter to lead Hanover to an 8-0 win against Bluffton University (Ohio), April 20.
She allowed only a base hit in the fourth inning and finished with eight strikeouts. Her shutout was the first against Bluffton in league play in more than three years (April 10, 2010 vs. Transylvania University).
Boyd, a thrower, was named the HCAC’s field athlete of the week after her performance sparked the Panthers to the team championship at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Twilight Meet, April 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Boyd earned first place in the hammer with a 41.97-meter toss and placed second in discus with a 35.31-meter effort.
She also logged a fourth-place showing in the shot put with a 10.31- meter heave.
Chambers was named the conference’s track athlete of the week after a pair of second-place finishes at the Twilight Meet.
She finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.57 seconds and was second in the 200-meter dash in a career-best time of 26.08 seconds, which ranks as the second-fastest time in school history at the distance.
In the meet, Chambers also won the long jump with a 5.16-meter leap.
