Hanover College’s men’s tennis team secured a spot in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s post-season tournament with a 9-0 victory against Defiance College (Ohio). The Panthers' regular-season finale was played Saturday, April 27, in Defiance, Ohio.
Brothers Brian and Reid Clark (New Palestine, Ind.) sparked the shutout with a pair of three-set victories in singles play and a triumph at No. 1 doubles.
Brian, a sophomore, outlasted Defiance’s Ryan Nelson, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9, at No. 1. Reid, a freshman, earned a 6-3, 5-7, 10-5, win against Cord Speelman at No. 2.
The Clarks teamed for an 8-6 victory against Nelson and Speelman at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Devon Sharpe (Indianapolis, Ind.), playing his final regular-season match, defeated the Yellow Jackets’ Justin Walker, 6-4, 6-3, in a clash at No. 4 singles.
Sharpe also paired with freshman Joshua Ruse (Brownsurg, Ind.) for an 8-1 win against Tyler Thiel and Michael Vanderkolk at No. 3 doubles.
Hanover, now 5-12 overall and 5-4 in the HCAC, will host the league’s six-team championship tournament May 4-5. The annual event will be played at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Defiance dipped to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the league with the setback.
