Hermes sets mark in season finale

Sophomore attacker Nick Hermes (Grayslake, Ill.) set a school scoring record, but Hanover College’s men’s lacrosse team capped its season with an 18-12 loss at Benedictine University (Ill.). The Panthers’ season finale was played Saturday, April 27, in Lisle, Ill.

Hermes scored three goals to raise his season total to 34, surpassing Hanover’s previous single-season mark of 33 set by Josh Green in 2012.

Junior midfielder Zac Cheatle (Fox River Grove, Ill.) and sophomore midfielder Luke Karnick (Indianapolis, Ind.) each added three goals for the Panthers, which close the season 5-11 overall and 3-7 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference.

Hanover led 2-1 late in the first quarter, but Benedictine (7-9; 5-5 MLC) countered with 10 of the next 11 goals to build an 11-4 lead at the intermission.

Sophomore attacker Matt Weber (Centerville, Ohio) scored three minutes into the second half. Hermes, who also set a Hanover record with 24 assists this season, followed back-to-back goals to trim the Eagles’ advantage to 11-7 fewer than five minutes into the third period.

Benedictine netted two goals late in the stanza to increase the Panthers’ deficit to 13-7. Both teams scored times in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
