Hanover College’s softball squad split two games at Anderson University to close the season. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader was played, Saturday, April 27, in Anderson, Ind.
Sophomore pitcher Leah Kemmerer (North Vernon, Ind.) tossed a complete-game four-hitter to lead Hanover to a 2-0 victory in the first game. The Panthers fell, 9-1, in the second contest.
Hanover’s offense was limited to just two hits in the opener, but combined both with an error to score one run in the fourth inning.
Freshman catcher Victoria Wilson (Camby, Ind.) led off the frame with a base hit and moved to second on an infield error. Sophomore rightfielder Chelsie Nuhring (Lynnville, Ind.) followed with a run-scoring double.
Freshman third baseman Allison Arnold (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led off the seventh inning with a walk. Ashley Cochran (New Albany, Ind.), who entered as a pinch runner, rounded the bases on a passed ball and two wild pitches to give the Panthers a two-run cushion.
Kemmerer (9-7) finished with seven strikeouts. Despite the four hits and three walks, she did not allow a runner past second base.
In the second contest, Anderson (20-14; 10-4 HCAC) scored eight runs in the first inning and added a run in the second to grab a 9-0 advantage. Hanover scored once in the top of the fifth for the final margin.
The Panthers (13-19; 8-8 HCAC) had just four base hits in the game.
Arnold poked a single to lead off the fifth and advanced to third after a wild pitch and infield grounder. She later scored on an infield roller by freshman second baseman Sarah Richey (Henryville, Ind.).
Cochran (1-4), a junior pitcher, started in the circle, but left without recording an out after allowing eight runs on five hits.
Sophomore Christina Davidson (Cincinnati, Ohio) tossed the final four innings. She gave up four hits and one earned run.
