Timely goals by Alvis, Tumlin give soccer OT win

Sophomore forward Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored early in the 109th minute to lift Hanover College’s women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory in its season-opener at Heidelberg University (Ohio).

Hanover (1-0) trailed 1-0 after The Berg’s Brittany Yost deflected a rebound into the net in the 59th minute.

The Panthers, which outshot Heidelberg, 28-3, needed a goal by freshman midfielder Rebecca Tumlin (Harrison, Ohio) early in the 88th minute to force overtime.

Tumlin netted her first career goal with a header off a corner kick by senior back Chloe Hutchinson (Louisville, Ky.).

Hanover outfired The Berg 7-0 in the opening half and needed a 14-2 outburst in the second period to finally net the equalizer. The Panthers had a 6-0 cushion in shots during the decisive second overtime.

Alvis, who has seven career goals, and sophomore midfielder Autry Graham (Versailles, Ky.) led Hanover’s attack with four shots apiece.

Freshman goaltender Karla VanderWeele (Argos, Ind.) posted two saves through 110 minutes during her first collegiate outing.
