Hanover College’s women’s tennis team defeated Anderson University 5-0 to set a school record for wins in a season and advance to the championship match in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s post-season tournament.
Hanover, now 12-3 overall, swept three doubles matches and used victories at Nos. 1-2 singles to shut out Anderson and earn a spot in the league’s title match.
Senior Danielle Miller (Fairway, Kansas) and freshman Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.) accounted for three of the Panthers’ five wins.
The duo paired for an 8-3 win against the Ravens’ Courtney Postmus and Ashlan Millikan at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Mallory Noble (Fishers, Ind.) and sophomore Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.) edged Anderson’s Sylvia Schering and Michaela Hammel, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomores Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.) and Kelsey Jones (Hanover, Ind.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win against Michaela Hurd and Kourtney Brubaker at No. 3.
Miller and Spicer sealed the record-setting triumph with singles wins.
Miller defeated Postmus 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Spicer notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2 against Shering at No. 2..
Hanover's 12 wins this season eclipses the Panthers' 1995, 1999 and 2001 squads, which each notched 11 victories and earned a conference championship.
Hanover will face the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the Heartland Conference championship. The match will begin at 10 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 20, at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
