Hanover College’s women’s tennis team captured the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 5-1 victory against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The HCAC tournament finale was played Sunday, Oct. 20, at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Hanover opened the clash with wins in two of the three doubles matches. The Panthers, 13-3 overall this season, grabbed the crown with three singles victories.
Senior Danielle Miller (Fairview, Kansas) and freshman Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.) held off Rose-Hulman’s Paige Cook and Marie Stettler for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.) and freshman Mallory Noble (Fishers, Ind.) defeated Suzana Mohd and Kylie McCollum, 8-5, at No. 2.
Sophomores Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.) and Kelsey Jones (Hanover, Ind.) trailed 5-2 in the No. 3 battle with the Engineers’ Lauren Reberger and Sydney Short, before falling 9-8 (3).
Hanover earned its first conference title since 2008 by winning three singles matches.
Miller knocked off Stettler 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. Noble handled McCollum 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5.
The Panthers earned the league championship when Poston completed a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 against Rose-Hulman’s Lauren Miller.
Hanover has earned the HCAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA III national tournament. The event will take place May 19-24 in Claremont, Calif.
