Hanover College’s women’s basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit to knock off Denison University (Ohio), 75-70, in the opening game of the M-Club Shootout in Alliance, Ohio.
Junior guard Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) scored 15 points, freshman guard Jessie Davidson (Lexington, Ind.) had 14 and junior forward Caitlin Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind.) added 13 for Hanover, now 1-2 this season.
Senior forward Elyse Weddle (Bloomfield, Ind.) hit the go-ahead basket to give the Panthers a 71-70 lead with 52 seconds left in the contest.
Hopkins scored from inside to bump Hanover’s cushion to 73-70 with 37 seconds to go and Davidson dropped in two free throws with eight seconds on the clock to seal the victory.
Denison (3-1) jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening four minutes of action and held a 32-20 lead with six minutes left in the half.
Bischoff canned two three-pointers to help the Panthers trim the margin to 38-30 at the intermission.
Bischoff scored seven points and sophomore forward Stephanie Pahren (Metamora, Ind.) hit a pair of buckets to pull Hanover within 49-48 with 12 minutes to play in the second period.
Junior forward Megan Caudill (Richmond, Ind.) nailed a three-pointer to push the Panthers ahead 53-51 with 10:52 remaining and, from that point, the squads were tied five times and swapped the lead on three occasions down the stretch.
Hanover was 16-of-34 from the field in the second half (47.1%) and finished 29-of-72 (40.3%).
The Panthers committed just seven turnovers in the outing and forced the Big Red into 25.
