Weddle nets career high in loss at Franklin

Hanover College’s women’s basketball team tipped off its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with an 82-76 loss to Franklin College in Franklin, Ind.

Senior forward Elyse Weddle (Bloomfield, Ind.) scored a career-high 22 points to lead four Hanover players in double figures. Junior guard Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) and freshman backcourt mate Jessie Davidson (Lexington, Ind.) scored 11 points apiece, while junior forward Caitlin Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind.) added 10 points.

Katie Brewer posted game highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds to spark Franklin (2-5; 1-0 HCAC).

Hanover held a 65-64 lead with five minutes left before the Grizzlies went on an 11-0 run through a two-minute stretch to grab a 75-65 lead with just 2:56 remaining in the tilt.

Davidson and Hopkins each scored from inside to trim the margin to 75-69 with 51 seconds on the clock.

Franklin hit 7-of-10 free throws in the last minute of play to lead by as many as nine points (82-73).

Davidson canned a three-pointer with two secons left for the final tally.

The teams were tied 16 times and swapped the lead 12 times during the nip-and tuck clash.

Hanover held a 37-35 lead at the half and led by as many as seven points (48-41) in the opening four minutes of the second period.

The Panthers, now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference, finished 31-of-62 from the field (50%) and 10-of-16 from the free throw stripe (62.5%).

Each team turned the ball over 22 times. Hopkins picked up six steals to lead Hanover’s defense.
