Last-minute run clips Hanover

Centre College (Ky.) used a 9-2 run in the final 47 seconds to clip Hanover College’s women’s basketball squad, 71-70, in a non-conference clash in Collier Arena.

Sophomore guard Kelsey Block (Madison, Ind.) canned two free throws to give Hanover a 68-62 lead with 47 seconds left in the contest.

Centre countered with a bucket from Maggie Hartlage and a steal and three-point play by Olivia Colliver to trim the Panthers’ lead to 68-67 with 32 seconds on the clock.

Junior guard Shauna Watson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Hanover a 69-67 lead with 28 seconds to play.

The Colonels, however, had three attempts at the basket on the next trip down the floor and eventually tied the game at 69-69 on Paige Baechle’s putback with 14 ticks remaining.

The Panthers turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass. Hartlage, who swiped the pass, was fouled on the play and made two free throws to nudge Centre ahead, 71-69, with just six seconds to go.

With a final attempt to force overtime, junior guard Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) went the length of the court and was fouled on a last-second attempt from point-blank range.

Hopkins, with only two-tenths of a second on the clock, hit the first of two free throws, but her second shot rolled off the rim for the final margin.

Hopkins led four Hanover players in double figures with 15 points. Junior forward Caitlin Bischoff (Atlanta, Ind.) had a career-high 10 rebounds and added 13 points to notch her first career double-double.

Block finished with a career-best 13 points off the bench. Freshman guard Jessie Davidson (Lexington, Ind.) added 11.

Baechle tallied 17 points and 13 boards to pace Centre, now 6-2 this season.

Hanover slipped to 3-5 overall with the setback.
