Hopkins, Chambers earn HCAC honors

Juniors Alicia Hopkins (Columbus, Ind.) and Briahna Chambers (Bell, Texas) have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s athlete of the week in their respective sports.

Hopkins, a guard for Hanover’s women’s basketball squad, averaged 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.5 steals to lead the Panthers to a pair of HCAC road wins last week.

She posted 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals in an 80-77 victory at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Jan. 22. She followed with a career-high 25 points, along with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals, in an 88-77 overtime win at Defiance College (Ohio), Jan. 25.

The Panthers, 9-8 overall and 7-3 in the league, return to the hardwood, Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio).

A jumper and sprinter for Hanover's track & field team, Chambers was recognized as the Heartland Conference’s women’s indoor field athlete of the week for her performance at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night Invitational, Jan. 24.

Chambers was first overall in the long jump, turning in the best effort in the HCAC this winter with a leap of 5.12 meters (16-feet, 9.75-inches). She won the event by more than four inches.

She also outdistanced the field in the 200 meters, earning first place with a time of 27.60 seconds, and placed second in the 60-meter dash (8.26).

Hanover, idle this weekend, will compete in the Anderson University Indoor Invitational, Feb. 8, in Anderson, Ind.
