Bass, James propel Hanover at Manchester

Junior guards Tim Bass (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Kyle James (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for 39 points and 10 assists to lead Hanover College’s men’s basketball squad to an 80-71 win in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash at Manchester University.

Bass scored a game-high 22 points and dished out four assists, while James tallied 17 points and six assists to lead Hanover to its fifth consecutive victory against the Spartans.

Sophomore forward V.J. Billups (Jeffersonville, Ind.) had 14 points and classmate Evan Bingham (Louisville, Ky.) added 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds off the bench.

Bingham scored five of his points to help Hanover build a 20-7 advantage in the opening eight minutes of action.

Bass and James each totaled 11 points in the frame as the Panthers held a 43-35 lead at the break.

Manchester trimmed the deficit to 47-41 in the first five minutes of the second half. However, Bingham scored five straight points during a 50-second span as Hanover pushed its lead to 55-44 with 12:30 left in the contest.

The Spartans pulled within seven points on five occasions through the next five minutes, but would get no closer down the stretch.

Bass netted 11 of his points in the last eight minutes, while James and Billups chipped in four apiece, as Hanover prevented a late Manchester rally. The Panthers led 77-64 with 1:07 left and forced the Spartans to foul in the closing seconds.

Hanover, now 17-8 overall and 14-4 in the league, was 28-of-50 from the field (56%), including seven three-pointers. The squad was 17-of-28 from the foul line (60.7%).

Brady Dolezal and Jon Thompson scored 19 points apiece to lead Manchester, which caps its season 5-20 overall and 4-14 in the Heartland Conference.
