Ninth inning run clips Panthers

Hanover College’s baseball squad was edged by Capital University (Ohio), 6-5, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.

Hanover and Capital combined for 25 hits in the game. The Crusaders had 13 hits, with a two-out single and double leading to the winning run in the top of the ninth.

The Panthers (2-2) trailed 5-3 after five innings, but senior second baseman Zach Shultz (Greenwood, Ind.) smacked a two-out, two-run double to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth.

The teams combined for seven base runners in the seventh and eighth innings, but neither could score a run.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, senior closer Chip Hockenbury (Elizabeth, Ind.) was tagged for a single and double as the Crusaders surged ahead, 6-5.

Junior designated hitter Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) led off the Panthers’ ninth with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A fly ball to shallow right field and an infield popup ended the threat.

Brooks and junior catcher Nolan Hall (Knightstown, Ind.) each finished 3-for-5 at the plate and scored a run. Senior rightfielder Kolton Chapman (Lynnville, Ind.) reached base three times with a single and two walks and also crossed the plate.

Freshman pitcher Cody Reister (Underwood, Ind.) worked the first six innings on the mound for Hanover. He allowed nine hits and five earned runs with a walk and three strikeouts.

Sophomore Matt Powers (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) tossed two scoreless innings before giving way to Hockenbury to start the ninth.
