Hanover drops tilt at Indiana Southeast

Hanover College’s baseball squad lost to Indiana University Southeast, 8-5, in a nine-inning contest in New Albany, Ind.

Junior first baseman Matt Brooks (Goddlettsville, Tenn.) and sophomore outfielder Chris Ares (Versailles, Ky.) had two hits apiece to lead Hanover’s eight-hit effort at the plate.

Brooks was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Ares was 2-for-5 with a double. Both players knocked in one run and scored a run.

Senior designated hitter D.C. Craig (Carrollton, Ky.) smacked a two-run double to give Hanover a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Indiana Southeast countered with two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to build a 4-2 cushion.

Brooks hit a two-out, run-scoring double to shave the deficit to 4-3 in the third inning. The Grenadiers, however, plated three runs in the bottom half of the frame to extend the margin to 7-3.

Ares and senior second baseman Zack Shultz (Greenwood, Ind.) each had run-scoring singles in the fourth inning as the Panthers pulled within 7-5.

Indiana Southeast added a run in the bottom of the fourth for the final margin.

Hanover totaled six hits in the first four innings of play, but managed just two the rest of the way to thwart any rally.
