Baseball falls in league opener

Hanover College’s baseball squad fell to Manchester University, 7-2, in the Panthers’ Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener. The contest was played at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind.

Freshman catcher Austin Holloway (St. Leon, Ind.) had two of Hanover’s nine hits, including his first collegiate triple. Senior leftfielder D.C. Craig (Carrollton, Ky.) swatted a run-scoring single and senior first baseman Matt Brooks (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) had a double and scored a run.

Senior hurler Mitch Hunnicutt (Seymour, Ind.) recorded the loss after working seven innings on the mound. Hunnicutt (2-3) scattered nine hits and four runs. He walked one and fanned a season-high nine batters.

Sophomore Matt Powers (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) tossed the eighth and ninth innings. He allowed three runs on five hits.

Manchester (7-7; 1-0 HCAC) built a 3-0 lead before the Panthers trimmed the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Junior designated hitter Ryan Johns (Cincinnati, Ohio) reached on an error and moved to third on Brooks' double. He eventually scored from third on a passed ball. Brooks later scored on Craig’s base hit.

The Spartans, collecting eight of their 14 hits in the closing three innings, added a run in the seventh and three in the eighth for the final margin.

Hanover slipped to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the Heartland Conference.
