Hanover College baseball player Matt Newman (Bloomington, Ind.) and golfer Robert Bader (Louisville, Ky.) have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference athletes of the week in their respective sports.
Newman, a junior infielder, was named the Heartland Conference’s top hitter after reaching base 12 times in four games for the Panthers last week. He batted .643, tallying nine hits in 12 at-bats with a home run, four doubles, five runs-batted-in and four runs scored. He also walked twice and was hit by a pitch.
Newman leads Hanover in hitting this season, boasting a .403 average. He has 27 hits, including nine doubles and a homer. He has knocked in a team-leading 14 runs and scored 10.
Hanover split four Heartland Conference games during the previous week. The Panthers are 8-12 overall and 4-6 in the HCAC heading into an April 8 clash with Franklin College.
Bader, a senior, set a school 36-hole record to earn medalist honors and lead Hanover’s men’s golf team in the Hanover Invitational at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour, Ind.
Bader posted back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish with a school-record four-under-par 140 and win the individual title by five strokes. The effort was one shot lower than his previous mark of 141, set at the Transylvania University (Ky.) Invitational in 2011.
Bader has won the past two Hanover Invitational crowns and has three top-two finishes in the event.
The Panthers totaled a school-record 596 (297-299) in the tourney and finished second in an eight-team field.
Hanover returns to the links Tuesday, April 8, in the Big Four Classic at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
