Hanover College’s women’s golf team completed its appearance in the NCAA III championship. The tournament wrapped up Friday, May 16, at the Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Due to weather-related days pushing the end of the third round into the final day of competition, a cut was administered to insure completion of the fourth round. The top 12 teams in the standings after three rounds, and the top six individuals not on those 12 teams, were to participate in the final round.
Hanover posted a 348 in the third round to finish in 15th place in the 21-team field with a 1,057 (358-351-348). The Panthers landed just behind No. 26 Wartburg College (Iowa) and No. 34 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which each totaled 1,041 strokes and also missed the cut.
Junior Brooke McKay (Carmel, Ind.), who had been in the top 40 through three rounds, led Hanover’s effort in the tournament. McKay had nine pars in the third round and finished with her second consecutive 81. She totaled a 31-over 247 (85-81-81).
Sophomore Erika Shepherd (Jeffersonville, Ind.) posted nine pars and birdie to close with an 82 in the third round. She finished with a 44-over 260 (89-89-82).
Freshman Devan Smith (Depauw, Ind.) recorded eight pars on her final day of competition. Smith closed with an 89 and a 54-over 270 (93-88-89) in the tournament.
Sophomore Brittany Gingerich (Millersburg, Ind.) capped her first NCAA tourney with a 96, including six pars and a birdie. She finished with a 288 (91-101-96)
