Junior Shelby Williamson (Ellettsville, Ind.), sophomore Kelly Gehlbach (Wilmington, Ohio) and classmate Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind.) represented Hanover College's women's tennis team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit regional tournament in Bloomington, Ind.
The ITA Summer Circuit provides collegiate players in all divisions an opportunity to continue competing during the summer months. More than 100 players participated in the regional event.
Hanover head coach Ryan Miller praised the effort of his players, stating, “I am proud of these ladies for taking the initiative to compete against some of the best in college tennis. I have been associated with this tournament for the past seven years and I can not remember a Hanover player ever entering the tournament."
Miller believes the participation of Hanover players in this event represents a larger picture.
“The presence of Hanover players in the ITA Summer Circuit tournaments really symbolizes the culture change our program is currently undergoing. In order for us to be competitive on a regional and national scale, we have to become a year-round tennis program,” Miller explained.
Hanover will launch its 2014 campaign Sept. 4 with a home battle against Oakland City University at the Zeddies Tennis Center.
