Kloentrup, Brandvik lead all-conference honorees
Outside hitters Rachel Kloentrup (Morning View, Ky.) and Kirsten Brandvik (Indianapolis, Ind.) led a group of five members of Hanover College's volleyball squad who were named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's all-league team.

Kloentrup, a junior, was tabbed a first-team honoree for the second consecutive year. Brandvik, a sophomore, was named to the first team after being an honorable-mention selection as a freshman.

Sophomores Abby Merritt (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Jennifer Wullenweber (Milan, Ind.) each earned honorable mention recognition for the Panthers. Newcomer Sarah Quebe (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named to the HCAC's all-freshman team.

Kloentrup had a team-leading 561 digs and ranked third on the squad with 227 kills.

Brandvik sparked the Panthers' attack with a team-best 263 kills and 28 service aces. She also ranked second on the team with 399 digs and had 48 total blocks.

Merritt, an outside hitter, ranked second on the team with 254 kills and 62 blocks. She also tallied 373 digs.

Wullenweber, in her first season as the team's setter, tallied a team-high 874 assists and shared the team lead with 28 aces.

Quebe, a middle hitter, led the Panthers' defense with 89 total blocks, including team highs with 16 solo blocks and 73 block assists. She also added 169 kills and 25 aces during the season.

Hanover closed the 2009 season with a 14-17 record. The Panthers placed third in the Heartland Conference standings with a 6-2 mark, including a string of five straight league wins.

Hanover ends season with loss in HCAC tourney
The Hanover College volleyball squad capped its season with a four-game loss to Anderson University in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's six-team post-season tournament. The match was played Saturday, Nov. 7, in Bluffton, Ohio.

Anderson, the No. 6 seed, defeated Hanover 15,25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, to advance in the tournament. The Ravens (17-14) moved ahead to face No. 2 seed College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) in one of the semifinal matches.

Sophomore outside hitters Kirsten Brandvik (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Abby Merritt (Indianapolis, Ind.) had 12  kills apiece to lead Hanover, which had beaten five straight HCAC opponents heading into the tournament.

Brandvik also added nine digs, two service aces and four block assists for the Panthers. Merritt chipped in with eight digs and two block assists.

Rachel Kloentrup (Morning View, Ky.), a junior outside hitter, totaled a match-high 17 digs for Hanover, while sophomore setter Jennifer Wullenweber (Milan, Ind.) had a contest-best 39 assists.

Hanover ended its season with a 14-17 overall record. The Panthers, picked to finish sixth in the league in a preseason coaches' poll, won six of eight HCAC matches during the season and placed third in the final standings.

Panthers sweep Franklin to keep Victory Ball
Hanover College's volleyball squad capped its regular season with a three-game victory against Franklin College in the annual battle for the Victory Ball trophy. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash was held Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Collier Arena.

Hanover defeated the Grizzlies 25-18, 25-17, 25-15, to close the regular season with a 14-16 record. The victory was the fifth HCAC win in a row for the Panthers, which finished 6-2 in the league and will be the No. 3 seed in conference tournament.

Sophomore outside hitters Kirsten Brandvik (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Abby Merritt (Indianapolis, Ind.) led Hanover's balanced attack.

Brandvik posted a team-high 11 kills along with six digs and two service aces. Merritt added 10 kills and five digs.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Kloentrup (Morning View, Ky.) chipped in eight kills and a team-best 14 digs. Sophomore setter Jennifer Wullenweber (Milan, Ind.) had a team-high 35 assists and six digs, while junior defensive specialist Natalie Fansher (Noblesville, Ind.) added seven digs.

Franklin ended its season with a 4-19 overall record. The Grizzlies finished 1-7 in the conference.

Coaches place Panthers sixth in HCAC title hunt
The Hanover College volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in a preseason polling of the league's nine head coaches.

The Panthers, guided by 11th-year head coach Peter Preocanin, earned 44 points in the poll. Hanover had a 12-19 overall record in 2008. The Panthers tied Bluffton University (Ohio) for fourth in the conference race with a 5-3 mark.

2009 Heartland Conference Preseason Volleyball Poll

The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) was the Heartland Conference coaches' favorite to win the 2009 crown. The Lions, winners of 10 straight league titles, earned 80 points in the poll, including eight of the nine first-place votes. Anderson University placed second with 66 points and one first-place vote. Defiance College (Ohio) was third in the balloting with 59 points.

Hanover will tip off its 2009 campaign Sept. 4-5 in a tournament at Capital University (Ohio). The Panthers' home-debut will be Sept. 11-12 during the Hanover Invitational in Collier Arena. Preocanin's squad will open its HCAC slate Saturday, Oct. 3, on the road against Bluffton University (Ohio).
