Walters, Martin lead four Panthers on all-HCAC team
Four members of Hanover College's women's basketball team have earned post-season honors from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Senior forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) and sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) each received first-team all-HCAC honors from the league's nine head coaches. Sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) earned honorable mention recognition, while guard Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) was named to the conference's all-freshman team.
Walters, a three-time all-conference honoree, was a first-team selection for the first time in her collegiate career. She averaged 11.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in 27 games for the Panthers this season.
Walters grabbed 249 boards during the season to push her career total 823 rebounds, making her the leading rebounder in school history.
Martin was a first-team honoree for the second consecutive season. She led the Heartland Conference in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per outing through 26 games.
Franz picked up honorable mention recognition for the second straight season. She averaged 11.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest in 27 starts for the Panthers.
Schmahl was named to the HCAC's all-freshman team despite starting just two games and playing 15 minutes per contest. She averaged 4.4 points, 2.0 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game.
Hanover set a school record with 18 victories during the 2008-09 campaign. The Panthers posted an 18-9 record and finished third in the HCAC with a 10-6 record. The squad advanced to the championship game of the Heartland Conference tournament.
Hanover drops title match at Transylvania
Transylvania University (Ky.) captured the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's automatic berth in the NCAA III national tournament with a 79-69 victory against Hanover College's women's basketball squad. The title bout was played Saturday, Feb. 28, in Lexington, Ky.

Sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) scored 14 points and sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) posted 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Panthers, which had four players in double figures.
Martin represented Hanover on the all-tournament squad.
Sophomore guard Olivia Ackridge scored a game-high 19 points to pace Transylvania, which had four players with more than 10 points. Junior guard Brittany Henderlight, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight boards for the Pioneers.
Hanover built a 38-32 lead at the intermission, but were outscored 47-31 in the second half. The Panthers committed 17 turnovers and shot just 32.1 percent from the floor (9-of-28) in the final 20 minutes of action.
Though outrebounded 51-31 in the game, Transylvania outscored Hanover 27-3 off turnovers and had a 10-0 advantage on fastbreak points.
The squads combined for 46 fouls and 60 free throw attempts. Hanover was 22-of-30 from the line (73.3%), while the Pioneers connected on 19-of-30 foul shots (63.3%).
Hanover capped its season with a school-record 18 wins and finished 18-9. Transylvania improved to 22-5 overall.

Second-half surge pushes Hanover into finals
Hanover College's women's basketball squad advanced to the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 72-68 victory against Anderson University. The semifinal contest was played Friday, Feb. 27, in Lexington, Ky.
Hanover, which posted its school-record 18th win of the season, will square off against host Transylvania University (21-5) in the championship tilt. The game will tip off at 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28. The victor earns the HCAC's automatic berth in the NCAA III national tournament.
Transylvania earned its slot in the tournament finale with 72-65 win against Franklin College.

Anderson built a 36-31 lead at the intermission. The Ravens shot 50 percent from the field in the first period (14-of-28), including eight three pointers.
Hanover outscored Anderson, 26-12, in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Schmahl and sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) scored seven points apiece during the run, which pushed the Panthers into a 57-48 advantage with 9:54 to play.
Hanover (18-8) maintained the cushion and held a 69-60 lead after a jumper by Schmahl with 2:20 on the clock. Then Anderson mounted a final surge.
The Ravens, behind five points from Hawthorne, used an 8-0 run to cut the margin to 69-68 with just 26 seconds remaining in the game.
Schmahl hit two free throws with 19 seconds to go and Walters hit 1-of-2 with 11 seconds left to lock up the victory.
Hanover shot 47.5 percent from the floor in the outing (28-of-59), including a 6-of-11 effort from long range (54.5%). The Panthers outrebounded the Ravens, 39-36.
Panthers snag Ravens in semifinal tilt
Hanover College's women's basketball team will battle Anderson University in the semifinals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The game will tip off at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, at Transylvania University (Ky.) in Lexington, Ky.

Anderson is the No. 2 seed in the tourney and earned an opening-round bye. The Ravens closed the regular season with a 15-10 record, including a 12-4 mark in Heartland Conference games.
Admission costs $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and students. Children under the age of 11 will be admitted free of charge. There will be no charge for college students with vaild identification cards. Heartland Conference VIP Passes will be honored.
Anderson swept the two regular-season contests against Hanover. The Ravens notched a 66-59 victory when the squads played Dec. 13, in Anderson, Ind., and posted a 66-53 win, Jan. 31, in Collier Arena.
Hanover is just 2-7 in its last nine games against Anderson. The Panthers did knock off the Ravens, 61-58, in the second meeting between the teams last season - Feb. 6, 2008, in Collier Arena.

Hanover needs overtime to advance in tourney
Hanover College's women's basketball squad advanced to the semifinals of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament with a 110-102 overtime victory against Bluffton University (Ohio). The game was played Tuesday, Feb. 24, in Collier Arena.
With the win, Hanover, the No. 3 seed in the six-team tourney, tied the school's single-season record for victories. The Panthers (17-8) will face No. 2 Anderson University in a semifinal game at Transylvania University (Ky.). The contest will tip off at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, in Lexington, Ky.

Hanover and Bluffton were tied 16 times, including an 87-87 deadlock after regulation. The Beavers grabbed a 90-89 lead on a three-point play by freshman center Emily Shellabarger 30 seconds into the overtime period. Freshman guard Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) answered with a layup to push Hanover ahead 91-90 with 4:20 remaining and the Panthers did not trail again.
Schmahl scored 10 of her season-best 15 points in the overtime period and was one of six Hanover players in double figures. Sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) led the group with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Martin added nine points during the extra session.
Shellabarger led Bluffton with 24 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Kim Miller added 23 points and four assists for the Beavers (15-11).
Hanover shot 52.7 percent from the field (39-of-74) and outrebounded Bluffton 51-30. Bluffton hit 11 three-pointers in the game and made 36-of-78 field goals (46.2%).
The 110 points were the most for Hanover since the Panthers pounded the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 111-33, Dec. 9, 1995. Bluffton's 102 points were the most allowed by Hanover since the University of Wisconsin-Stout defeated the Panthers, 104-77, Dec. 30, 2002.

Hanover earned the No. 3 seed in the six-team tourney by completing its conference schedule with a 10-6 mark. The Panthers, 16-8 overall, will host Bluffton University (Ohio) in the opening round at 7:30 p.m. in Collier Arena.
Bluffton, the No. 6 seed, is 15-10 overall and 7-9 in the Heartland Conference.

Panthers edge Franklin in overtime
Freshman guard Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) hit two free throws in the final 22 seconds to help push Hanover College's women's basketball squad to an 88-86 overtime victory against Franklin College. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt was held Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Franklin, Ind.
Franklin's Traci Lippold hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied at 76-76. Schmahl, senior forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) and sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) each scored four points in the extra session to propel Hanover to its third consecutive triumph.
Franz snapped the 16th tie of the game with a pair of free throws with 1:17 left to give Hanover an 86-84 lead. Schmahl made 1-of-2 free throws with 22 seconds remaining to nudge the margin to three points (87-84). Franklin's Jessica Schwartz scored from inside with 10 seconds to go to get the Grizzlies within a point at 87-86. However, Schmahl canned one foul shot with five seconds left on the clock to lock up the victory for the Panthers (16-8; 10-6 HCAC).
Franz scored 21 points to lead Hanover, which also got 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds from Walters. Schmahl and sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) added 12 points apiece off the Panthers' bench.
Lippold netted a game-high 22 points and dished out seven assists to lead Franklin (13-10; 9-6 HCAC). Heather Harper added 21 points and six boards for the Grizzlies.
Hanover handles Manchester, 65-53
Hanover College's women's basketball squad defeated Manchester College, 65-53, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt, Saturday, Feb. 14, in Collier Arena.
Sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) scored 20 points, while sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) posted 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to spark Hanover to its Senior Day triumph. Senior forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) added eight points and eight boards in her final regular-season appearance at home.
Manchester was led by senior forward Kelley Meiklejohn, who tallied a game-high 26 points and had seven rebounds. Senior guard Sarah Bose added eight points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, which had won three of four games entering the clash.
Hanover (15-8; 9-6 HCAC) led 37-24 at the break before Manchester made a charge early in the second half. Meiklejohn scored three consecutive baskets to pull the Spartans within 42-34 with 13:14 left in the contest.
Hornaday, who netted 14 points in the second period, scored five points to spark a 10-2 run during the next seven minutes to give the Panthers a 16-point cushion (52-36) with 6:16 remaining in the contest. Manchester would get no closer than nine points (54-45) in the final minutes.
Walters sets rebounding mark in Hanover win
Senior forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) posted her 10th double-double of the season to lead Hanover College's women's basketball team to a 73-61 victory against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Collier Arena.
Walters, who scored 12 points, became the leading rebounder in Hanover history with a game-high 14 boards. The effort on the glass pushed her career total to 776, surpassing the former mark of 773 set by Jennifer Skaggs from 1997-2001.
Sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Panthers in double figures. Sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) added 13 points off the bench, while sophomore forward Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) had 11 points and six boards.
Freshman foward Alisa Dickerson notched 17 points and six rebounds to lead Rose-Hulman. Senior forward Liz Ridgway added 16 points and five boards for the Engineers (6-15; 3-11 HCAC).
Ridgway scored six straight points and Dickerson added three to help Rose-Hulman grab a 23-20 lead with 5:21 left in the first half.
Hanover proceeded to outscore the Engineers 29-9 during the next 12 minutes to jump into 49-32 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game.
The Panthers held a double-digit cushion the rest of the contest.
Walters moves up, but Panthers fall at Bluffton
Bluffton University (Ohio) snapped a two-game losing streak with an 80-74 win against Hanover College's women's basketball team in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference battle Saturday, Feb. 7, in Bluffton, Ohio.
Sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) posted game highs with 23 points and 16 rebounds to lead Hanover, which dipped to 13-8 overall and 7-6 in the HCAC with the setback.
Senior forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) scored 18 points and pulled down 12 boards for the Panthers. The effort pushed Walters' career total to 762 rebounds, placing her second among Hanover's career leaders.
Walters passed former Hanover standout Andrea Spurgeon, who grabbed 760 rebounds for the Panthers from 1996-2000. She now trails only Jennifer Skaggs, who had 773 rebounds for Hanover from 1997-2001.
Sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) added 13 points off the bench for the Panthers. She is averaging 14.7 points in Hanover's last four games.
Ginny Buckingham scored 17 points and Emily Shellabarger had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead Bluffton, which had four players in double figures.
The game featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, including four lead changes in the final four minutes.
Hanover had control early in the contest and held a 33-23 lead late in the first period. The Beavers, however, outscored Hanover 22-6 in the final six minutes of the half to grab a 45-39 lead at the break.
Hanover remained within two possessions before mounting a 12-4 run during a five-minute stretch to regain the lead at 64-60 with seven minutes left in the contest.
Bluffton (13-8; 5-7 HCAC) eventually tied the game at 65-65 on a three-pointer by Becky Ruble with 5:07 to play. Just two minutes later, Ruble canned another trey to give the Beavers the lead for good at 70-68.

Hanover uses balanced effort to handle MSJ
Hanover College's women's basketball squad rolled to an 89-67 victory against the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Five players reached double figures for Hanover, which won for the ninth time in the team's last 11 outings. Sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) scored a game-high 21 points off the bench and sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) added 20 points for the Panthers.
Hanover took control of the game with a 19-4 run during a six-minute stretch late in the first half. The burst, powered by seven points from Hornaday, pushed the Panthers' lead from 22-21 to 41-25 with just 2:45 remaining in the period.
Hanover held a double-digit cushion the rest of the way. The Panthers led by as 29 points (81-52) in the second half.

Anderson University remained in the hunt for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 66-53 win against Hanover College's women's basketball squad, Saturday, Jan. 31, in Collier Arena.
Trailing 26-25 at the break, Anderson (11-8; 9-2 HCAC) opened the second half with a 21-6 run to bolt into a 46-32 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Senior forward Kayla Martin scored 21 of her game-high 25 points in the second period as the Ravens maintained a double-digit advantage through the game's final seven minutes.
Sophomore center Molly Martin (Terre Haute, Ind.) had 25 points and seven rebounds to lead Hanover, which dipped to 12-7 overall and 6-5 in the conference. Sophomore guard Holly Vogel (North Manchester, Ind.) added eight points and six boards for the Panthers.
Hanover outrebounded Anderson by a 37-22 margin. The Panthers, however, shot just 43.1 percent from the floor (22-of-51) and hit only 7-of-15 free throws (46.7%).
Anderson was 29-of-55 from the field (52.7%) and 6-of-14 from long range (42.9%). The Ravens hit 2-of-4 free throws, but did not attempt a foul shot until the final minute of the contest.

Hanover College's women's basketball team knocked off Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference front-runner Transylvania University (Ky.), 91-83, Thursday, Jan. 29, in Collier Arena.
Sophomore guard Lacey Hornaday (Rushville, Ind.) matched her career-high with 23 points off the bench and sophomore forward Torin Franz (Bloomington, Ind.) added a career-best 22 points to pace Hanover, which shot 47.8 percent from the field (32-of-67) and outrebounded Transylvania, 57-38.
Senor forward Rachel Walters (Ladoga, Ind.) had 13 points, while sophomore guard Chelle Bentz (Brookville, Ind.) added a career-high 12 points for the Panthers (12-6; 6-4 HCAC).

The Pioneers again cut the margin to five points (70-65) with eight minutes to go. Hanover went on a game-clenching 19-9 run to pump the margin to 15 points (89-74) with two minutes left in the contest.
Hanover scored eight of its final 10 points from the charity stripe in the closing three minutes. Franz, Hornaday and freshman guard Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) each hit a pair of free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Vogel's late basket lifts Hanover to HCAC win
Sophomore guard Holly Vogel (North Manchester, Ind.) scored from inside with 1.8 seconds remaining to give Hanover College's women's basketball team a 91-90 victory against Defiance College (Ohio). The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game was held Saturday, Jan. 24, in Defiance, Ohio.
Vogel, who scored 12 points off the Panthers' bench, netted the game-winner after Defiance's Holly Stein had given the Yellow Jackets a 90-89 lead with a free throw with just 11 seconds left in the game.

Stein scored 20 points to pace Defiance, now 6-12 overall and 2-8 in the Heartland Conference. Mandie White added 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, which had four players in double figures.
Hanover led by 17 points (71-54) with 11 minutes left in the second period. Defiance, fueled by eight points from White, outscored the Panthers 27-9 through the next seven minutes to earn an 81-80 lead.
The game was tied four times and the squads swapped the lead four times in the final three minutes of play.
Defiance's Shavonda Price forced a turnover and converted a layup to give the Yellow Jackets an 89-88 lead with 34 second left. Bentz hit 1-of-2 free throws with 21 seconds remaining to tie the contest at 89-89.
Hanover, led by Walters' effort, outrebounded Defiance 47-33. The Panthers attempted 45 free throws, however, hitting just 26 (57.8%).

Franklin snaps Hanover's winning streak
Franklin College's Monica Planalp hit two free throws with 8.8 seconds remaining to lift the Grizzlies to a 64-62 victory against Hanover College's women's basketball squad. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest was played Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Collier Arena.
The setback snapped Hanover's six-game winning streak, which marked the program's best string since the 2000-01 campaign. The Panthers dipped to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the HCAC with the loss.

The Panthers made just 9-of-19 free throws in the contest. The squad was 4-of-9 from the charity stripe in the closing nine minutes of the game.

Hanover pulls out late victory at Rose-Hulman

Center Donna Marsh narrowly missed a triple-double for Rose-Hulman. Marsh posted 10 points, 14 rebounds and nine blocked shots to pace the Engineers (4-9; 2-5 HCAC). Senior forward Liz Ridgway added a team-best 18 points and three boards.
Walters hit two free throws with 1:22 left to give Hanover a 56-55 lead. The Panthers and Engineers each missed a pair of free throws during a 17-second span. Franz sealed the triumph with two foul shots with just six seconds remaining on the clock.
The contest was tied nine times, including six times in the second period. Martin scored eight points to ignite an 11-3 run which gave Hanover a 46-39 lead with 7:39 to play. In the next three minutes, Rose-Hulman countered with a 10-2 run to regain the lead at 49-48 with 4:39 left.
There were two ties and the squads exchanged the lead three times in the closing two minutes.
Hanover shot just 30.2 percent from the floor in the outing (19-of-63). The Panthers, however, outrebounded the Engineers, 50-42. Sophomore guard Holly Vogel (North Manchester, Ind.) added eight rebounds for Hanover.
