Panthers fourth at HCAC finale; Burpo all-conference 
Hanover College placed fourth at the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championships. The seven-team, 36-hole tournament was held Oct. 11-12 at the Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Freshman Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) earned all-conference honors with a sixth-place finish for Hanover, which totaled 738 strokes as a team (361-377). Burpo fired a 91 in the second round after opening with an 85 on the 5,800-yard course.

The Panthers'  Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.), a freshman, finished 12th overall with a 187 (93-94). Junior Kristen Brookes (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshmen Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) tied for 21st in the 37-golfer field. Each player carded a 192 in the tournament. Brookes shot a 102 in the second round after a 90 in the first round. Schroeder posted a 93 in the first round and a 99 on the second day of competition.

Freshman Morrison Mims (Lexington, Ky.) placed 24th for Hanover with a 197 (104-93).

Transylvania University (Ky.) earned the Heartland Conference's team championship with a 705 (352-353). The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Stephanie Harrington was the event's individual medalist with a 162 (84-78).

Hanover sits in second at HCAC championships
Hanover College's women's golf team sits in second place after the opening round of the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. The 36-hole tournament is being held Oct. 11-12 at the Hulman Links Golf Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Panthers totaled 361 strokes in the opening 18 holes to trail front-runner Transylvania University (Ky.) by just nine shots. The Pioneers, led by Megan Foley's 84, totaled 352 strokes in the first round.

Hanover freshman Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) is tied for fourth place after firing an opening-round 85 to lead the Panthers. Junior Kristen Brookes (Columbia City, Ind.) carded a 90 and is eighth overall in the field.

Freshmen Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) and Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.) are tied for 14th place. Each athlete shot a 93 on the 5,800-yard course.

Manchester College is in third place after totaling 368 strokes. The Spartans' Erica Hahn is the individual leader after an opening-round 83.

Franklin College, the defending tournament champion, lurks in fourth place with a 372. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is fifth overall with a 382 and Anderson University is sixth with a 387. Defiance College (Ohio) rounds out the field with a 429.

Schroeder and Gantz earn HCAC honors
Senior tennis player  Ali Gantz (Greenwood, Ind.) and freshman golfer Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference athletes of the week in their respective sports.

Gantz earned the HCAC honor after posting two key singles victories in the past week. Schroeder won the golf honor after winning two tournaments for the Panthers last week.

Gantz, playing in the No. 2 position, raised her record to 8-0 in league singles matches this season with two wins. She edged Franklin College's Emily Ruch, a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and posted a 6-1, 6-0, triumph against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Megan Chann. Both matches were played Oct. 4 in Terre Haute, Ind.

With the team wins, Hanover's tennis squad nailed down the HCAC's regular-season tennis championship and will be the top seed in the conference's post-season tournament Oct. 17.

Schroeder set a Hanover 18-hole record while leading the Panthers at the Centre College (Ky.) Fall Invitational, Oct. 4, in Danville, Ky. She fired a two-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors in the event.

Schroeder also earned medalist honors in a dual match against Oakland City University, Sept. 30, at the Old Capital Golf Course in Corydon, Ind. In that match, she fired a then-school-record 78 to take the top individual honors.

The record-setting 74 erased four strokes off Hanover's previous 18-hole record. Schroeder and freshman Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) each turned in 78s at meets earlier in the fall.


Schroeder sets school mark at Centre
Freshman Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) set a school 18-hole record to lead Hanover College's women's golf squad at the Centre College (Ky.) Fall Invitational. The competition was played Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Old Bridge Golf Course in Danville, Ky.

Schroeder fired a two-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors in the event. She defeated Centre's Emily Backert by three strokes (77). The effort marked Schroeder's second consecutive outing where she earned medalist honors.

Schroeder's 74 erased four strokes off Hanover's previous 18-hole record. Schroeder and freshman Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) each turned in 78s at meets earlier in the fall.

Burpo placed eighth out of 28 golfers with an 88. Freshman Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.) finished 12th overall with a 95 and classmate Morrison Mims (Lexington, Ky.) was 13th with a 96.

Hanover, as a team, placed third among four teams in the tournament with 353 strokes. Host Centre won the team title with 334 strokes. Transylvania University (Ky.) placed second a 343. St. Catherine College (Ky.) was fourth with 418 strokes.

Hanover cards program's first victory
For the first time in the history of Hanover College's women's golf program, the Panthers captured first place in an event. Hanover defeated Oakland City University, 341-390, in a dual match Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Old Capital Golf Course in Corydon, Ind.

Under head coach Wayne Perry, Hanover set a school record with its 341-stroke total. The effort surpassed the Panthers' 18-hole total of 342 strokes during the second round of the Anderson University Invitational Sept. 7 at Killbuck Golf Course. 

Freshman Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) earned medalist honors against Oakland City. She led the Panthers with a school-record-tying round of 78. Freshman Morrison Mims (Lexington, Ky.)  was second overall with an 86.

Hanover rounded out its scoring with sub-90 rounds from senior Kristen Brookes (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.). Brookes turned in an 88 and Wood posted an 89.


Hanover linksters ninth at DePauw Classic
Hanover College's women's golf team finished ninth among 13 teams at the DePauw University Small College Classic. The 36-hole tourney was played Sept. 27-28 at the Deer Creek Golf Club in Clayton, Ind.

Hanover totaled 708 strokes in the event (356-352). Freshmen Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) led the Panthers with a top-20 finish. Burpo fired a a 167 (84-83) on the 5,837-yard course. Freshman Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) placed 24th out of 83 golfers with a two-day total of 170 (88-82).

Otterbein College (Ohio) captured the event title for the second consecutive year. The Cardinals collected 629 strokes to finish ahead of Olivet College (640), host DePauw (641) and Allegheny College (644).

Emily Bachert from Centre College (Ky.) was the tournament's medalist. Bachert, who won the Hanover Invitational two weeks ago, fired a 146 (72-74) to win by four strokes. She defeated Otterbein's Catherine Brunoehler, who placed second overall with a 150 (76-74).

DePauw Invitational results


Hanover fourth in wind-halted tourney
The Hanover College's women's golf squad placed fourth among 11 teams in the 2008 Hanover Invitational. The event, originally scheduled for 36 holes, was limited to just 18 after high winds forced the cancellation of the second round.

The opening 18 holes were played Saturday, Sept. 13, at Sunrise Falls Golf Course in Madison, Ind.

Hanover totaled 357 strokes to finished just one shot behind third place Kentucky Wesleyan College (356). Centre College (Ky.) captured the team title with 322 strokes. Brescia University (Ky.) was second with 345.

Freshmen Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.),  Morrison Mims (Lexington, Ky.) and Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) each posted top-20 finishes to pace Hanover.

Burpo placed ninth out of 59 golfers with an 87. Mims was 11th with an 88 and Schroeder finished 16th overall with a 90.

Senior Kristen Brookes (Columbia City, Ind.) turned in a 92 and freshman Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.) had a 93 for the Panthers.

Centre athletes grabbed two of the top three slots. The Colonels' Emily Bachert earned medalist honors with a three-over-par 75. Paige Burton was second with a 78. Centre's Katie McKenna, last year's invitational champion, was fourth overall with an 83.

Women's golfers finish fourth at Anderson
The Hanover College women's golf squad opened its 2008 season at the Anderson University Invitational. The match was played Sept. 6-7 at Killbuck Golf Course in Anderson, Ind.

Hanover totaled 687 strokes (345-432) to place fourth overall in the eight-team field. Olivet College (Mich.) captured the title with 622 strokes (307-315). DePauw University was second with a 630 (306-324).

Senior Kristen Brookes (Columbia City, Ind.) and freshman Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind.) each fired 172s to lead Hanover's effort. Brookes fired a team-best 85 in the opening round and turned in an 87 in the second round. Burpo opened with a 92, but had a team-low 80 in the second round.

Freshman Morrison Mims (Lexington, Ky.) posted a 173 (85-88) for the Panthers. Freshman Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind.) shot a 175 (88-87) and freshman Natosha Wood (Columbia City, Ind.) had a 178 (87-91).

Olivet's Amber Conrad was the tournament's individual medalist. Conrad fired a 151 (76-75) to win by two strokes. DePauw's Nikki Garza was second with a 153 (75-78).
