Hanover dominates soccer all-conference squad
The Hanover College women's soccer team dominated the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's all-league honorees with eight selections on the squad. In addition, head coach Jim Watts was tabbed the conference's coach of the year.

Freshman defender Kaitlin McCulloch (Florence, Ky.) was named the Heartland Conference's newcomer of the year and was one of five Hanover players to earn first-team honors.

McCulloch was joined on the first-team squad by sophomore defender Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.), sophomore forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.), freshman forward Christa Hurak (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman midfielder Kelly McRoberts (Louisville, Ky.)

Junior forward Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio), sophomore midfielder Blaine Bishop (Pendleton, Ind.) and freshman goaltender Jayme Carney (Bloomington, Ind.) were each second-team honorees.

Watts was named the Heartland Conference coach of the year after leading Hanover to a school-record 13 victories. His squad finished 13-5-1 overall and tied with the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for first place in the HCAC's regular season standings with a 7-1 mark.

McCulloch, Schmahl and Carney anchored a defense which posted 11 shutouts and set a school record by limiting opponents to just 11 goals during the season. The unit's 0.58 goals-against average was the best mark in the program's 15-year history at Hanover.

Carney had a 12-5-1 record and piled up 54 saves, while McCulloch and Schmahl each added one goal during the season.

Hanover's offense set a school single-season record with 46 goals. Hurak and Jump led the attack with eight goals apiece. Selm and McRoberts netted six goals each for the Panthers.

Hurak led Hanover in scoring with 21 points, including her eight goals and a team-high five assists. Jump tallied 17 points with eight goals and an assist. Selm paired her six goals with four assists for 16 points.

Bishop totaled a goal and three assists, while McRoberts also had an assist for the Panthers.

Panthers fall in HCAC title clash with Transy
Transylvania University (Ky.) tallied a 2-0 victory against Hanover College's women's soccer team in a battle for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. The title bout was played Saturday, Nov. 7, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Senior midfielder Whitney Price had a goal and an assist to spark Transylvania, which earned the HCAC's automatic berth in the NCAA III national tournament with the triumph.

Senior forward Katie Kelly scored early in the 17th minute to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Price headed the ball to Kelly to set up the first goal of the contest.

The teams were even at four shots and two corner kicks apiece at the intermission.

Price bounced a shot off the post and into the net in the 55th minute to seal Transylvania's victory.

Transylvania outshot Hanover 10-5, including a 6-1 advantage in the second period. The Pioneers had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.

Freshman goaltender Jayme Carney (Bloomington, Ind.) had one save for Hanover, which had won 10 of its last 11 outings heading into the duel.

The Panthers dipped to 13-5-1 overall on the season with the setback.

Selm, Jump lead Hanover to championship match
Hanover College's women's soccer team advanced to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 2-1 victory against the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio). The tournament semifinal was played Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.

Junior forward Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio) scored the eventual game-winner and sophomore forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) had a goal and an assist to propel Hanover its berth in the Heartland Conference's title bout.

The Panthers, now 13-4-1 on the season, will host Transylvania University (Ky.) in the HCAC championship. The match will be played at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Ayres Complex.

Transylvania (12-6-1) advanced to the league's finale with a 1-0 win against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a semifinal battle in Terre Haute, Ind.

Jump snapped a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute with her eighth goal of the season. She scored off a free kick from Selm, who delivered the ball into a crowd just outside the six-yard box in front of the net.

Selm scored an unassisted goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. She booted a shot from 10 yards out into the upper corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.

Mount St. Joseph tied the match five minutes into the second period. The Lions' sophomore forward Andrea Caldwell punched the ball into the net from 12 yards out off a corner kick from junior midfielder Jessica Smith.

Hanover outshot Mount St. Joseph 16-8, but had just a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.

The victory was Hanover's 10th in its last 11 outings. The stretch includes a 4-1 win against Transylvania when the squads met Oct. 7 at Ayres Field.

Hanover in top four of HCAC coaches' soccer poll
The nine head coaches of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer programs have selected Hanover College to place fourth in the battle for the league's 2009 championship.

Hanover earned 54 points in the pre-season coaches poll. The Panthers, under second-year head coach Jim Watts, posted a 7-9 overall record in 2008. The team placed third in the Heartland Conference with a 5-3 record.

Transylvania University (Ky.) grabbed 79 points to be the pre-season favorites to win the HCAC crown. The Pioneers received seven first-place votes. The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) was second in the balloting. The Lions picked up 68 points, including one first-place vote. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed third in the poll. The Engineers earned 59 points with one first-place vote.

Hanover will begin the 2009 campaign with a pair of home matches Sept 5-6 at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex. The Panthers will host Eureka College (Ill.) Sept. 5, then square off against Knox College (Ill.) Sept. 6. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.

Hanover opens Heartland Conference action Saturday, Oct. 3, with a Homecoming battle against Anderson University. The match will start at 1 p.m. at the Ayres Complex.
