Panthers earn HCAC academic honors
Ten Hanover College student-athletes have earned academic honors from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The league announced its fall academic all-conference selections from each of its nine schools.
Hanover's fall academic honorees include junior football player Joe Vormohr (Portland, Ind.), senior cross country runners Jeremy Brownlee (Franklin, Ind) and Geoff Darmstaedter (Des Peres, Mo.), sophomore cross country runners Whitney Helton (Winslow, Ind) and Shawna McLetchie (Lexington, Ky.), sophomore soccer players Abby Simpson (Lexington, Ky.), Brandon Bottorff (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and J.P. Presley (Sunman, Ind.), and sophomore volleyball players Natalie Fansher (Noblesville, Ind.) and Megan Oilar (Noblesville, Ind.).
To qualify, the scholars must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be a varsity athlete. The cumulative grade-point average is the student-athlete's level at the end of the semester preceding the close of the fall season. Scholars also must complete the equivalent of a full academic year and be enrolled on a full-time basis at the institution to be eligible for the academic honor.
Selm leads trio on all-conference squad
Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) leads a trio of Hanover College athletes named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's women's soccer all-league team.
Selm, a first-team selection, was joined on the squad by senior forward Stephanie Tribbett (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman back Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.), who each received second-team honors.
Selm led the Panthers with nine points in her first collegiate season. She scored a team-high four goals and had one assist during the campaign. She also led the Panthers with 49 shots and 27 shots on goal.
Tribbett, a two-time all-conference honoree, shared the team lead with four goals. She had just 10 shots during the season with six shots on goal. She tallied three goals in the final 10 days of the season to help Hanover win three of its last four matches.
Schmahl anchored Hanover's defense, which allowed 1.59 goals per outing. She also netted three goals.
Under first-year head coach Jim Watts, Hanover capped its season with a 7-9 overall record. The Panthers tied for third place in the Heartland Conference standings with a 5-3 mark.

Hanover posts shutout in season-finale
Hanover College's women's soccer team blanked Anderson University, 2-0, in its season-ending match. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference battle was held Saturday, Nov. 1, in Anderson, Ind.
Hanover scored two goals in a three-minute span during the second period to notch the victory.
Sophomore midfielder Kristen Lebrun (Richmond, Ky.) chipped in a shot from six yards out to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute. The goal was Lebrun's first of the season.
Senior forward Stephanie Tribbett (Fort Wayne, Ind.) converted a rebound attempt into a goal in the 55th minute for the match's final tally. The goal was Tribbett's team-leading fourth of the season.
Hanover, winners of three of its final four outings, outshot Anderson by a 13-3 margin, including an 11-1 advantage in the decisive second half.
Hanover, under first-year head coach Jim Watts, capped its season with a 7-9 overall record. The Panthers were 5-3 in the Heartland Conference. Anderson finished with a 6-14 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the league.
Kentucky Wesleyan slips by Panthers
Kentucky Wesleyan College outlasted Hanover College's women's soccer team, 2-1, in a non-conference outing Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Trailing 2-0 late in the match, Hanover junior midfielder Felicia Adams (New Albany, Ind.) deposited a ball into the net to pull the Panthers within a goal in the 87th minute. The goal was her second of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio) blasted a shot off the crossbar from 25 yards out with two minutes left, narrowly missing a potential game-tying goal for the Panthers.
Kentucky Wesleyan (7-13-1) outshot Hanover by a 9-1 margin in the first period. The Panthers (6-9) grabbed a 13-6 advantage in the shots in the second period.
Kentucky Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on a goal by Stephanie Butler. The squad increased the buffer in the 39th minute when Laura Nance curled a shot around the left post for a 2-0 lead.
Freshman goalie Kari Brown (Ellettsville, Ind.) totaled five saves in 90 minutes for the Panthers.

Tribbett's goal enough for Senior Day win
Hanover College's women's soccer program celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory against Bluffton University (Ohio). The contest was played Saturday, Oct. 25, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Senior forward Stephanie Tribbett (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored the match's lone goal in the 12th minute. Tribbett blasted a shot off the crossbar, then popped the rebound into the net from just inside the box. The goal was her third of the season and second in as many outings.
Hanover, now 6-8 overall and 4-3 in the HCAC, outshot Bluffton 20-5 with 12 shots on goal. Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) led the Panthers' attack with six shots.
With the setback, Bluffton fell to 5-9-1 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Hanover blanks Franklin with second-half burst
Hanover College's women's soccer squad shut out Franklin College, 3-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match, Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hanover outshot Franklin 16-1 in the first period, but could not tickle the twine. After the scoreless first half, the Panthers netted three goals in the second period to earn the team's second win in its last three outings.
Senior forward Stephanie Tribbett (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored the game-winner in the 50th minute by left-footing a ball into the back of the net from 25 yards out. The tally was Tribbett's second of the season.
Freshman forward Shelby Henderzahs (Noblesville, Ind.) chipped a ball into the net from five yards out to give the Panthers a 2-0 cushion in the 75th minute. Freshman midfielder Emily Williams (Indianapolis, Ind.) assisted on the goal, which marked Henderzah's second of the year.
Just two minutes later, freshman back Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) capped Hanover's scoring with an unassisted blast from 30 yards out into the upper right corner of the net. The goal was Schmahl's third of the season.
Hanover outshot Franklin by a 32-2 margin. The Panthers, now 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the HCAC, had seven corner kicks to zero for the Grizzlies (1-15; 0-6 HCAC).
Early goals propel MSJ to league win
The College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) scored two goals in the opening seven minutes of play and went on the blank Hanover College's women's soccer team, 3-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match. The battle was held Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Mount St. Joseph outshot Hanover 24-2 in the contest. The Lions, now 9-3-2 overall and 5-0 in the HCAC, scored two goals on the squad's first two attempts and outshot the Panthers 13-2 in the first half.
Sophomore Ashley Maynard assisted on each of Mount St. Joseph's two early goals. Allie Pirman redirected a Maynard corner kick for a tally in the sixth minute. Nikki Jones chipped in a goal off a Maynard cross in the seventh minute to give the Lions a two-goal cushion.
Mount St. Joseph's Beth Schuermann pushed the margin to 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 48th minute.
Freshman goalie Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) notched seven saves for Hanover, which dropped to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the league with the setback.

Hanover blanks Defiance in HCAC tilt
A three-goal outburst in the second period fueled Hanover College's women's soccer squad to a 3-0 victory against Defiance College (Ohio). The outing was held Saturday, Oct. 11, as part of Hanover's 81st Homecoming celebration.
After a scoreless first period, Hanover scored on three of its six second-half shots to post the shutout victory.
Senior forward Stephanie Tribbett (Fort Wayne, Ind.) netted the eventual game-winner in the 55th minute when she lofted a 25-yard chip-shot over the Defiance goaltender's outstretched arms. The goal was Tribbett's first of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Kristen Lebrun (Richmond, Ky.) assisted on a goal by sophomore midfielder Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio) in the 78th minute to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Hanover capped the scoring, and nailed down the win, with a tally in the 84th minute. Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season for the match's final margin.
Hanover, now 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the HCAC, outshot Defiance by a 12-4 margin.
The loss pushed Defiance's record to 5-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Heartland Conference.

Panthers edged 1-0 in HCAC clash at Transy
Transylvania University (Ky.) used an early goal to edge the Hanover College women's soccer team, 1-0, in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash, Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Lexington, Ky.
Transylvania outshot Hanover by a 20-1 margin in the contest, including a 14-0 outburst in the first period. The Pioneers netted the match's lone goal in the 12th minute on tally by Whitney Price.
Freshman goaltender Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) totaled 10 saves in the outing for Hanover, which dipped to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the HCAC.
With the triumph, Transylvania raised its record to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Heartland Conference.

Hanover ends skid with HCAC victory
The Hanover College women's soccer squad snapped a five-match losing streak with a 1-0 victory against Manchester College. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tilt was played Saturday, Oct. 4, in North Manchester, Ind.
Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute to propel Hanover to its third win of the season (3-6; 1-1 HCAC). The goal marked Selm's team-leading third of the season.
Manchester, now 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the league, outshot the Panthers by a 13-9 margin and had five corner kick opportunities compared to just two for Hanover.
Freshman net-minder Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) collected eight saves for the Panthers.
Panthers fall in two overtimes at Rose-Hulman
For the second straight outing, Hanover College's women's soccer team was knocked off, 3-2, in double overtime. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology edged the Panthers in the squad's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Sunday, Sept. 28, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Rose-Hulman's Molly Richardson netted the game-winner just one minute and eight seconds into the second overtime session to give the Engineers the victory. Richardson scored from in front of the net after taking a crossing pass from Jen Lyman.
Hanover (2-6; 0-1 HCAC) rallied in the final five minutes of regulation to send the gave into overtime. Junior midfielder Felicia Adams (New Albany, Ind.) popped a header into the net off a corner kick from freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) in the 85th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Jennifer Page (Crawfordsville, Ind.). Page scored in the sixth minute off a deflected pass from Adams to get Hanover on the scoreboard.
Rose-Hulman's Liz Ridgway headed a cross into the net to tie the match at 1-1 in the 35th minute. Aleksandra Kampa scored seven minutes into the second period to push the Engineers ahead 2-1.
Rose-Hulman outshot Hanover by a 19-6 margin, including a 14-2 margin in the second period and overtimes. Freshman goalie Kari Brown (Ellettsville, Ind.) had seven saves in her second start of the season for the Panthers.
Rose-Hulman (6-3; 1-1 HCAC) earned a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Goal in final ticks of second OT lifts Urbana
Celina Miller scored with just 25.5 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift Urbana University (Ohio) to a 3-2 victory against Hanover College's women's soccer team. The contest was held Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Freshmen forwards Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) and Shelby Henderzahs (Noblesville, Ind.) each scored goals for Hanover, which dipped to 2-5 overall with the setback.
Selm gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio). The tally was Selm's second of the season.
Urbana (3-5) scored twice in the first half to battle back and grab the lead. The Blue Knights' Brooke Schultz scored in the 30th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Leah Guey found the back of the net with just six seconds left in the first half to give Urbana a 2-1 cushion at the intermission.
Henderzahs knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal in the 69th minute. The goal, assisted by freshman midfielder Sarah Hackett (Cincinnati, Ohio), was the first of Henderzahs' collegiate career.
Urbana outshot the Panthers by a 15-9 margin and had seven corner kicks to just two for the Panthers. Hanover was whistled for offsides 14 times in the contest.
Freshman goaltender Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) collected nine saves in nearly 110 minutes in the Panthers' net.

Hanover blanked in clash with Earlham
Earlham College posted a 3-0 victory against Hanover College in an intra-state battle between the squads Saturday, Sept, 13, at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Hillary Carter and Karman Duchon combined for three first-period goals to lift Earlham to its fifth victory in six outings this season (5-1). Carter scored two goals and added an assist for the Quakers. Duchon added a goal and an assist.
Carter scored in the ninth and 28th minutes. She also assisted on Duchon's goal in the 17th minute.
Earlham had a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 5-3 cushion in corner kicks in the contest.
Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) had three shots to spark Hanover's offense.
Freshman netminder Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) had five saves for Hanover, which dropped to 2-4 on the season.
Panthers split weekend road matches
Hanover College's women's soccer team posted a victory in one of two road matches during the recent weekend. The Panthers (2-2) defeated St. Mary of the Woods College, 3-1, Sept. 5, but dropped a 3-0 decision at Capital University (Ohio) Sept. 7.
Hanover outshot St. Mary of the Woods, 42-4, in the triumph against the Pomeroys. Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.), freshman back Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) and junior midfielder Jennifer Page (Crawfordsville, Ind.) each netted a goal for the Panthers.
Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Jump (Columbus, Ohio) added an assist.
Capital jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its 3-0 shutout against Hanover. The Crusaders (2-1) outshot the Panthers 20-4, including an 11-1 margin in the decisive first period.
Capital's Katie Robinson scored from 25 yards out in the 18th minute and Chelsea Cladwell found the back of the net off a cross in the 27th minute to build the early two-goal cushion.
The Crusaders' Tasha Ballard chipped in a pass from five yards in the 65th minute for the final tally.

Hanover blanked on road at Thomas More
Thomas More College (Ky.) tagged Hanover College's women's soccer team with a 5-0 loss Tuesday, Sept. 2, at The Bank of Kentucky Field in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Lauren Wietmarschen and Deanna Goshdigian each tallied two goals and an assist to lead Thomas More to the victory. The Saints, 2-0 on the season, outshot Hanover by a 34-6 margin and had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Panthers' freshman goaltender, Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.), had 10 saves, but allowed five goals in 67 minutes in the net. First-year goalie Kari Brown (Ellettsville, Ind.) played more than 22 minutes for the squad and had one save.
Wietmarschen scored from 25 yards out to give Thomas More a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Goshdigian popped in a goal on a breakaway in the 31st minute to give the Saints a 2-0 halftime lead.
Thomas More's Torie Cross and Goshdigian each scored within a 10-second span in the 47th minute to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. Cross found the back of the net off a corner kick by Wietmarschen. Goshdigian scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway.
Wietmarschen scored in the 59th minute off a pass from Goshdigian for the final margin.

Watts era opens with shutout against Asbury
First-year head coach Jim Watts and Hanover College's women's soccer squad opened the 2008 season with a 1-0 victory against Asbury College (Ky.). The lid-lifter was played Saturday, August 30, at the the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex.
Freshman back Abbey Schmahl (Aurora, Ind.) scored the lone goal with an unassisted tally from six yards out in the 36th minute. The game-winner was one of three shots on goal in the contest for Schmahl.
Hanover (1-0) outshot Asbury 13-5 in the contest and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman forward Olivia Selm (Zionsville, Ind.) led the Panthers' effort with seven shots.
First-year goalie Megan Van Dyke (Lexington, Ky.) posted two saves in 90 minutes in Hanover's net. Asbury (0-2) had just two shots in the second period.

Jim Watts to guide women's soccer program
Hanover College President Sue DeWine has named Jim Watts head coach of the College's women's soccer program.
A former head coach of Hanover's men's program, Watts returns to the College after seven seasons as the head women's coach at Earlham College and one season as an assistant coach with the men's squad at Williams College (Mass.).
Watts guided Earlham to a school-record 12 wins in 2007. He was named the North Coast Athletic Conference coach of the year after leading the Quakers to a 12-5-1 record. His squads posted a 45-67-7 mark during his stint at Earlham, including a 28-21-4 record the past three seasons. During that span, his teams featured two NCAC newcomers of the year and three all-region athletes.
Watts served as Hanover's head men's soccer coach during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic coach of the year in 1999 after leading the Panthers to a then-school-record seven wins (7-11-1). Hanover was 10-25-2 during his two seasons with the men's program.
Watts left Hanover prior to the 2000 campaign to serve as an assistant with the men's team at Williams. The Ephs finished that season with a 15-1 record and were ranked No. 1 in the nation.
A 1997 graduate of Franklin College, Watts was a three-year letterwinner and two-time team captain for the Grizzlies. He received a master's degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy (Ala.) in 2003. He is a native of North Vernon, Ind.
