Intensive Inquiries: Hanover's Mark of Distinction among Universities and Colleges of Indiana
The principal objective in undertaking a liberal arts education is to build a rich and diverse foundation of knowledge and a more complete understanding of the world. By choosing a small private college, you will be in the ideal environment to focus on the academic component of your education. At Hanover, however, learning is not limited to the campus.
The Intensive Inquiry program is available for you to travel off-campus and participate in activities not necessarily related to your major. A popular opportunity, students frequently engage in more than one Intensive Inquiry because:
- There are no additional costs for the program and no pre-requisite courses required;
- Informal and optional, these student-organized trips can involve workshops, public events, discussion groups and other cultural, historic or science-related activities - the only limit to the theme of the Intensive Inquiry is your imagination;
- The Inquiries include 8 to 12 students, one faculty member, and usually last two days and a night – you can conduct your Intensive Inquiry during the weekend.
- In preparation for the event, you simply read a variety of books relating to the Inquiry's theme in order to be properly informed for a discussion group which follows.
- By electing to participate, you will have educated yourself about a specific subject that interests you, connect to people with similar interests and have fun while engaging in the learning experience.
Because this form of off-campus learning is organized entirely by students, Intensive Inquiries offer the educational bonus of allowing you to acquire organizational experience. Each Intensive Inquiry is designed by a Student Leader, who assumes the responsibility of not only compiling a reading list, but also making all of the necessary arrangements. Although the college will provide transportation and cover trip-related expenses, the Student Leader will coordinate the Intensive Inquiry by:
- Preparing and submitting the proposal, including a budget request;
- Acquiring and distributing materials to the participants;
- Engaging the sponsorship of a faculty member;
- Coordinating any logistical arrangements;
- Submitting expense receipts and a final report of activity.
A Resume-Building Opportunity
By participating in Intensive Inquiries, you can expect that future employers and graduate program admissions boards will take note of this co-curricular experience because it demonstrates an initiative to undertake study that is independent of course requirements. Student Leaders will enjoy the added benefit of having details to include during interviews and on their resumes about the demands of organizing an Intensive Inquiry.
Not all universities and colleges of Indiana offer such chances for students to gain valuable experience and explore their emerging interests in the way an Intensive Inquiry permits. They are an opportunity that should not be missed.
