Random thoughts….
This is the last regular class day for the term and I hope that beyond the required exams and papers and presentations you have come away from your classes with challenging thoughts and ideas that will keep you mentally engaged in the subject matter for quite some time.  That, after all, is the purpose of what we do around here.  The learning that goes on in the classroom is merely the salad course for a lifetime of feasting at the table of knowledge.  I do not need to tell you that your professors are among the most knowledgeable and dedicated educators you will find anywhere and their efforts this term were gifts of themselves to you and for you.  We in Student Life join you in thanking them for their good work.

Congratulations to all of the award winners from the various presentations yesterday.  You are too numerous to mention individually in this space, but we want you to know of our pride in your achievements.  Way to go!

To those of you who have checking accounts at River Valley Financial Bank, I have been asked by a RVFB representative to remind you that you will be receiving a new debit card in a few days and that your current debit card will be invalid after the 17th.  So if you are planning a trip over Spring Break and planned on using your RVFB debit card, make sure you have the new card.  Otherwise, you may become uncomfortably familiar with the term “beach bum.”

This is the last newsletter before Spring Break so let me wish for all of you fun and safe journeys wherever you are heading.

Residence Hall Closing Procedures for Spring Break
All halls will close for Spring Break at 6:00 PM on April 20 and will reopen at 10 AM on April 29.  All residents need to make plans to be out of the building and safely heading toward home or their break plans.

What to do if you are not coming back Spring Term

Graduating - Complete the Spring Term Housing Request - If you are graduating this April – CONGRATULATIONS!  Enjoy your last set of finals!  As you are graduating you will need to check out of your room.  Be sure to schedule some time with your RA, House Manager, House Director or AD so that they can check your room for repairs or damages.  Turn in your keys and then go off and head to grad school or wonderful rewarding careers.  Again – congratulations.

Traveling - Complete the Spring Term Housing Request  - If you are one of the lucky few who will be traveling to exotic and far off places next term, then you also need to remove all items from your room, schedule some time with either your RA, House Manager, House Director or AD and check out of your room.  Be certain to return your key.  Be careful traveling and learn lots!

Transferring - Complete the Spring Term Housing Request  - We will be sorry to see you go.  However, it is very important to continue your education.  Good Luck.  As you leave you also need to see Betty Bennett in the Dean of Students Office for transfer paperwork, remove all your possessions from your room, schedule some time with your RA, House Manager, House Director or AD and check out of your room.

What to do if you ARE coming back next term
Go home and have a relaxing break!  Before leaving make certain that you do the following:
Take home anything of yours that is valuable/irreplaceable

Schedule a check out time with your RA/House Manager or AD/House Director
Empty your refrigerator   (throw it in the garbage outside)
As you walk out the door to leave do the following:

Shut and lock your window  ~ Open your blinds  ~  Unplug all electrical items  ~   If you have a bike, secure it in your building’s bike room   ~  Take out your garbage ~ Turn the heat to low  ~  Turn off all lights ~  Shut and lock your door

While you are gone your room will be entered to ensure that the room is secured and electrical items are unplugged.  The door will be re-secured.

What to do if you need to spend any amount of time on-campus over the break - A request for an exemption must be submitted by 4/19.  The request for exemption is on MyHanover.  Students submitting a request late will be assessed a $10.00 administrative fee.  There is a $10.00 fee per day to stay during a break.  Exemptions will be granted on a case by case basis.

If you have any questions – please contact the Office of Student Housing at Ext. 7083 or email studenthousing@hanover.edu for assistance.
