Softball Preview: Pitchers and Catchers

Sydney Griffin launches a pitch toward home plate in the 2016 HCAC Tournament Champinoship

HANOVER, Ind. – As the Hanover softball team prepares for its 2017 campaign, we will look deeper into this year’s roster and break it down by position. We will begin with two positions that should be strengths of the 2017 squad: pitchers and catchers.

The Panthers had five pitchers see action in last year’s record-breaking season, and all five return this year. Those five combined to post a 3.47 team earned run average over 266.1 innings and limited opponents to three runs or less 18 times, including six shutouts.

Sophomore Sydney Griffin (Cambridge City, Ind.) made a strong first impression in her freshman season. In 25 appearances, Griffin tallied a 14-9 record with a 2.64 ERA. She completed 19 games, tossed five shutouts and struck out 123 hitters in 151.1 innings.

Griffin was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team after she led the league in appearances, games started, strikeouts and innings pitched, and was second in the HCAC in wins.

Returning for her senior year is Anna Phillippe (Greenfield, Ind.). Phillippe won five games in 17 starts in 2016. She logged 87.1 innings last year and will bring 11 career wins and 225.0 innings of experience into her final season.

Junior Tori Luster (Indianapolis, Ind.) served as the team’s primary backstop as a sophomore and will be asked to do so again in her third year in a Panther uniform. Luster hit .290 with four doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI in 30 games, and also threw out 35 percent of would-be base-stealers.

With plenty of experience returning at these two key positions, Hanover is primed to compete once again for the top spot in the HCAC in 2017.

Next week we will take a look at the Panthers’ infielders.
