Men's Lacrosse Preview: Goalies and Defenders

Jake Glass prepares for play in goal

HANOVER, Ind. – We are just over two weeks away from the Hanover men’s lacrosse team taking the field for the first time in the 2017 season, so let’s take a deeper look at this year’s roster by position groups.

The Panthers are coming off a 2016 season, which saw them finish 7-9 overall and 5-2 in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference. The mark in conference play was good enough to earn HC the second seed in the ORLC tournament. Hanover however, has bowed out in the semifinals in each of the first two years of the ORLC.

With a bevy of freshmen and sophomores on the roster this season, the Blue and Red will look to rely on the four returning all-conference selections from last season.

The defense will be an area that will seek improvement throughout the year, as HC lost three all-ORLC selections from last season’s back line.

Senior Jacob Bell (Evansville, Ind.) will make the move from the midfield position to more of defensive role this year. Bell appeared in 13 games last season, scoring one goal on two shots. The senior also recorded six ground balls and two caused turnovers in 2016, earning the team’s all-conference sportsmanship selection.

Incoming freshman Andrew Trachtman (Carmel, Ind.) will look to help Bell in guiding the Panther defense this season. Trachtman earned All-Indiana honors in 2016, his final year of high school action.

Despite the inexperience in the back line, Hanover will have the luxury of returning sophomore Jake Glass (Prospect, Ky.) in net. In his first season in 2016, Glass appeared in 15 games, making 14 starts, posting a 6-7 record. Glass ranked fourth in the ORLC in goals against average, allowing 10.23 goals per game.

Freshman net minder Noah Dubrava (Centerville, Ohio) has also impressed the coaching staff in the preseason, giving HC multiple options in goal.

Hanover will open the regular season with a non-conference road contest at Centre (Ky.). The Panthers and Colonels are set for an opening faceoff at noon on Saturday, Feb. 25.

Stay tuned for more in the men’s lacrosse preview series next week, as we cover the midfield position.
