Baseball Preview: Infielders

Jack Shine and Chase Sizemore

HANOVER, Ind. – As we continue our preseason look at the Hanover baseball roster, we turn our attention to the infielders.

The Panthers return all four starting infielders from a year ago, led by all-conference selections Jack Shine (New Albany, Ind.) and Chase Sizemore (Fishers, Ind.).

Shine, a junior and team co-captain for the 2017 season, is back as the team’s starting shortstop, and is expected to hit in the middle of the order once again. A Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention selection in 2016, Shine hit .281 in 36 games with a team-high 31 RBI. He also finished the year tied for second on the team in runs scored (24), hits (39), and extra-base hits (8).

Joining Shine in the middle of the infield will be Sizemore, who earned HCAC Second Team Honors in his freshman season. The sophomore second baseman started 29 games and hit .327 with 35 hits and 16 RBI. Sizemore also played a solid second base as he posted a .954 fielding percentage in 131 defensive chances.

Sophomores Josh Meszaros (Loveland, Ohio) and Ty Stover (Galveston, Ind.) finished last season as starters at third base and first base and will look to build on that experience in 2017.

In addition, the Panthers will count on two seniors and four freshmen to compete for playing time and provide depth this year.

With a young group of infielders, including three sophomores and a junior returning as starters from last year, there is plenty of experience to argue the Hanover infield could be the team’s strength this season.

With less than two weeks until Hanover’s season-opener in Florida, we will complete our look into this season’s team and the three-part series next week with a look at the Panthers’ outfielders.
