Men's Lacrosse Preview: Midfielders

Sam Green prepares for a face off

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men’s lacrosse team is just over a week away from opening the 2017 campaign, so let us delve deeper into this year’s roster.

Last week we took an in-depth look at the goalkeepers and defenders. This week we will overview the midfielders on the 2017 squad.

At the midfield position, sophomore Sam Green (Beaumaris, Australia) returns after being one of the best in the nation in face-offs in 2016. The 2016 Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team selection, won over 66 percent of his face-off attempts, ranking in the top 20 in all of NCAA Division III. He was also ranked ninth among all Division III midfielders. Green added five goals and two assists offensively as well.

A pair of 2016 ORLC Second Team selections return for another season in junior Chad Szczublewski (La Grange, Ky.) and sophomore Bret Schell (Dayton, Ohio). The two midfielders combined for nearly 34 percent of the goal scoring last year. Szczublewski ranked second on the team and seventh in the ORLC with 30 goals. The junior also added 12 assists for a total of 42 points, which was among the top 10 in the conference.

Schell’s first season with HC was a good one, as he was third on the team in scoring. His 26 goals were also 12th best in the ORLC. Ranking second on the team in assists with 15, Schell was among the top 15 in the conference in both assists and total points, 41.

Senior Dakota Kwasny (Port Washington, Wis.) is also back in the midfield for the Blue and Red in 2017. Kwasney appeared in just 12 games last season, but recorded eight goals and two assists in the limited action.

As a long stick middie, sophomore Evan Bartlett (Oxford, Ohio) will look to assist the youthful defense this year. Bartlett totaled 14 ground balls and four caused turnovers in 2016.

The Panthers will also sprinkle in a talented freshmen group at every position this year, as 18 of the 24 players on the roster are freshmen and sophomores.

Hanover opens the regular season with a 1 p.m. contest at Centre (Ky.), on Saturday, Feb. 25.
