Volleyball Preview: Defensive Specialists, Setters

HANOVER, Ind. – As the 2017 season nears, we begin our preview series for this year’s Hanover volleyball team with defensive specialists and setters.

The Panthers are coming off a year in which they finished 25-8 overall and undefeated at 9-0 in league play for the second straight season. With most of last year’s, record-setting team back this year, the expectations remain high for head coach Peter Preocanin in his 19th year at the helm of the Hanover volleyball program.

The Panthers led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last year in digs, and senior Monique Huynh (Indianapolis, Ind.) was a big reason why. Huynh, an honorable mention all-conference pick last year paced Hanover with 608 digs, which was also good for second in the HCAC.

Huynh also proved to be the team’s best server as the senior tallied a team-best 32 service aces in 115 sets played.

In addition to Huynh, sophomore Ally Williams (Fountaintown, Ind.), along with a pair of freshmen will provide depth on the back row for the Panthers.

Hanover also led the league in assists in 2016 as juniors Haley Alexander (Martinsville, Ind.) and Abby Crump (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined to give the Panthers a dynamic duo at the setter position.

As sophomores, they ranked seventh and eighth respectively in the conference and combined for 1203 of the team’s 1432 total assists. Alexander and Crump also combined to tally 419 digs and 37 service aces between the two of them, and will be counted on to provide similar production in 2017.

With the amount of experience returning, these two positions should serve as strengths on this year’s roster as the team prepares to make a return to the NCAA Tournament.

Hanover is set to open the season Friday, Sept. 1 at the Bluffton University Sommer Spiketacular in Bluffton, Ohio. The Panthers are set to play Heidelburg (Ohio) at 4 p.m. and Kalamazoo (Mich.) at 8 p.m. on day one. The second part of our volleyball preview series will take a look at the outside and middle hitters.
