BOX SCORE

HANOVER, Ind. – With less than one minute remaining in the first overtime period, junior Tanner Korfhagen (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent a volley off a deflected cross into the back of the net, giving the Hanover men’s soccer team a 2-1 home victory over Wabash (Ind.) Sunday afternoon.

After both sides recorded one goal in the first 45 minutes of action, Hanover (2-2-0) and Wabash (2-1-0) played a scoreless second half, forcing the extra 10-minute session. With 51 seconds remaining in the overtime period, Korfhagen scored on HC’s lone overtime-shot attempt.

The Little Giants logged four shots over the final 10 minutes of regulation and an additional two in the overtime period, but freshman goalkeeper Will Bedel (Walton, Ky.) was called on to make just one save, with the other five attempts not coming on goal. Bedel made three saves in the match and improved to 2-1-0 overall after picking up the victory.

Recording Hanover’s first half goal was junior Hunter Guthrie (Louisville, Ky.). Guthrie scored on a rebounded shot from senior Ryan Keeney (Rineyville, Ky.) in the 33rd minute. The junior’s goal was the first of his collegiate career.

Wabash opened the scoring at the 9:00 mark, but Guthrie’s late first half goal tied the match at the intermission, 1-1. The Panthers held a 7-4 edge in first half shot attempts, while the Little Giants enjoyed a 12-10 advantage in overall shots.

Korfhagen was the lone Panther to log multiple shots in the match and was one of five players for HC to post one shot on goal. The freshmen has now scored in back-to-back games, totaling two goals in two home matches this weekend.

Hanover has now won two straight matches against Wabash, and holds a 2-1-1 record versus the Little Giants since the start of the 2014 season.

The Panthers will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 15 and 16, when they compete in the Wilmington (Ohio) Kiwanis Classic. Hanover will open the tournament Friday evening, with a 5 p.m., neutral site contest against Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio).
