SEASON STATISTICS

GREENWOOD, Ind. – For the first time in his career, senior linebacker Layne Harnishfeger (Batesville, Ind.) has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Harnishfeger, who logged a career high 13 tackles in the 24-20 road loss at Maryville (Tenn.) last Saturday, becomes the first Hanover football player to win the conference defensive honor since Week 7 of the 2015 season. The Panthers won a total of three HCAC player of the week awards last year, with two coming on offense and another on special teams.

The senior did most of his damage in the backfield, where he recorded four tackles for loss, including three sacks. His four stops in the backfield pushed the Scots’ offense back 18 yards, while the three sacks totaled a loss of 15 yards for MC.

Harnishfeger also forced a fumble on a punt in the third quarter, which was recovered by teammate Kyle Treber (Mishawaka, Ind.) on the MC 13-yard line. The Panthers would score on the ensuing possession to take a 20-14 lead.

Overall, the Hanover defense held the Scots to 263 total offensive yards, including only 38 total offensive yards in the first half.

On the season, Harnishfeger is second on the team and second in the conference, behind Treber, with 11.5 tackles per game. He has double-digit stops in each of the team’s first two appearances in 2017. The junior is also second in the HCAC in tackles for loss and sacks after his big day.

Hanover will open conference play this weekend, as the team travels to Rose-Hulman for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sept. 16.
