Volleyball splits to open ASICS Invitational

Hanover College's volleyball team split two matches in the first night of action in the ASICS Invitational at Washington University (Mo.) in St. Louis.

Freshman middle hitter Margo Main (West Lafayette, Ind.) notched seven kills to lead Hanover to a three-game victory against Blackburn College (Ill.) in the Panthers' opening match.

Hanover defeated Blackburn 25-9, 25-14, 25-7 in the first of the Panthers’ four matches in the two-day event.

Senior outside hitters Rachel Hasewinkel (Sheridan, Ind.) and Rachel Regenauer (Pewee Valley, Ky.), along with middle hitter Courtney Crawford (Louisville, Ky.), tallied four kills apiece.

Hasewinkel also chipped in five service aces, while freshman setter Haley Alexander (Martinsville, Ind.) notched a team-high 10 assists.

Hanover vs. Blackburn (Ill.) statistics

Hanover lost to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (4-0) in the squad’s second contest of the evening. The Panthers fell 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22 in the match.

Senior outside hitter Nicole Blevins (McCordsville, Ind.) had 12 kills and senior defensive specialist Maddie Hartman (Madison, Ind.) piled up 32 digs to lead the squad.

Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Brandvik (Indianapolis, Ind.) had eight kills, while Hasewinkel and Main each added seven.

Alexander and classmate Abby Crump (Indianapolis, Ind.) combined for 39 assists to spur the offense. Alexander tallied 20 assists and Crump added 19.

Hanover vs. Wisconsin-Oshkosh statistics

Hanover (2-1) returns to action at 11:30 a.m. CT against event host Washington. The Panthers will cap the invitational against North Central College (Ill.) at 1:30 p.m. CT.

Golfers fourth at English Invitational

The Hanover College women’s golf team finished fourth at the eight-team Jim English Invitational. The annual tournament, hosted by Centre College (Ky.), was held at the Danville Country Club in Danville, Ky.

Senior Erika Shepherd (Jeffersonville, Ind.) fired an 82 to pace the Panthers, while sophomore Scarlett Hartlage (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) posted in an 85.

Junior Devan Smith (Depauw, Ind.) turned in an 86 and senior Alli Lindenschmidt (Indianapolis, Ind.) completed Hanover’s scoring with a 91.

The Panthers totaled 344 strokes in the tournament. Milligan College (Tenn.), ranked 20th nationally (NAIA), earned the team title with 322 strokes. Bellarmine University (Ky.) was second with 324.

Bellarmine’s Katie Gathof claimed medalist honors with a one-over 74.

Hanover will compete in the Anderson University Invitational, Sept. 5-6, at Killbuck Golf Course in Anderson, Ind.

Panthers blank Brescia for road win

Hanover College’s women’s tennis squad did not lose a set while dispatching Brescia University (Ky.), 9-0, in Owensboro, Ky.

Hanover, off to a 2-0 start, snatched a trio of 8-0 doubles wins, and went on to sweep all six singles matches.
Seniors Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.), junior Mallory Noble (Fishers, Ind.) and senior Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.) each tallied 6-0, 6-0 victories at Nos. 4-6 singles.

Taylor, 12-4 in her last 16 singles outings, defeated Brescia’s Taylor Wathen. Noble handled the Bearcats’ Emily Adkins, while Poston shut out Eva Burelos.

The Panthers will participate in the DePauw University Fall Invitational, Sept. 5-6, in Greencastle, Ind.

Softball Prospect Camp set for Sept. 27

The Hanover College softball program will host a prospect camp for current high school players. The one-day camp will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1-4 p.m. at Kops-Bedel Stadium on Hanover’s campus.

Designed for athletes with the desire to play at the collegiate level, the camp will focus on all aspects of the game. Individuals should wear attire and bring their own glove, bat, helmet, cleats and, if appropriate, catcher’s gear.

The cost of the one-day camp will be $40. Please make checks payable to Hanover College Softball.

Golfers, Shepherd win Transy titles

Hanover College’s women’s golf team placed four in the top nine slots to earn the team title at the Transylvania University (Ky.) Intercollegiate. The 18-hole match was held at the University Club of Kentucky’s Wildcat Course in Lexington, Ky.

Senior Erika Shepherd (Jeffersonville, Ind.) fired a five-over 77 to claim medalist honors by two strokes.
Senior Brittany Mosteller (Indianapolis, Ind.) was tied for fifth with an 84 and classmate Alli Lindenschmidt (Indianapolis, Ind.) was just one stroke behind, in eighth place, with an 85.

Junior Devan Smith (Depauw, Ind.) capped Hanover’s scoring with an 87 and finished ninth in the 42-athlete field.

The Panthers totaled 333 strokes to post a four-shot advantage against Midway College (Ky.), which finished second among six schools with a 337. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology placed third with a 358.

Transylvania (Ky.) Intercollegiate results

Hanover will participate in the Jim English Invitational, Thursday, Sept. 3. The annual event, hosted by Centre College (Ky.), will be played at the Danville Country Club in Danville, Ky.

Panthers snag four-game win at Spalding

Hanover College’s volleyball team tipped off its season with a four-game victory against Spalding University (Ky.) in Louisville, Ky. The Panthers defeated the Golden Eagles 26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Hasewinkel (Sheridan, Ind.) racked up 12 kills and 15 digs to pace the attack. Freshman setter Haley Alexander (Martinsville, Ind.) had 16 assists and 10 digs.

Freshman setter Abby Crump (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the Panthers (1-0) with 21 assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Monique Huynh (Indianapolis, Ind.) posted a career-best four service aces.

Hanover will compete in the ASICS Invitational Sept. 4-5 in St. Louis, Mo. The Panthers will play four matches in the two-day event, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.).

Tennis opens with comeback win at IUS

Hanover College’s women’s tennis team used victories in five of the six singles matches to rally for a 6-3 triumph in the squad’s season-opener against Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.

Seniors Alexis Taylor (Frankfort, Ind.) and Allison Poston (Attica, Ind.), pairing in the No. 3 slot, posted an 8-0 doubles victory to help Hanover avoid a doubles sweep heading into singles play.

Taylor, Poston, junior Mallory Noble (Fishers, Ind.) and freshmen Susan Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Tori Schwartz (Nappanee, Ind.) each earned singles wins in the Nos. 2-6 slots to cap the decisive rally.

Noble and Poston each survived three-set matches to secure Hanover’s team triumph. Noble edged Indiana Southeast’s Abby Hurtgen, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 5. Poston bounced back for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 win against Anne Marie Mattox at No. 6.

Simpson, Koopman net goals to key shutout

Junior forward Elaine Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman forward Katie Koopman (Loveland, Ohio) each scored first-half goals to spark Hanover College’s women’s soccer squad in a 2-0 victory at DePauw University.

Hanover’s defense limited DePauw to just four shots and claimed a 20-4 advantage in attempts at the net. Simpson and junior forward Anna Cornacchione (Cincinnati, Ohio) each fired five shots, while senior midfielder Rachel Alvis (Cincinnati, Ohio) had three shots.

Simpson scored off a pass from Cornacchione late in the 26th minute to get the Panthers on the scoreboard. Freshman midfielder Shannon Hawkins (Carmel, Ind.) fed Koopman’s first career goal with an assist late in the 39th minute.

Senior goalie Morgan Cole (Mason, Ohio) turned away two of the Tigers’ four shots.

Hanover will return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, on the road against Kenyon College (Ohio).

Soccer edged in season-opener

Junior goaltender Rafael DiMaio (Sao Paulo, Brazil) posted six saves in his first collegiate start, but Hanover College’s men’s soccer team was edged 1-0 by DePauw University in the season-opener at the Panther Athletic Complex.

DePauw (1-0) scored on a chip shot from point-blank range in the 16th minute of action. The Tigers went on to earn a 14-8 advantage in shots.

Hanover tallied six of its eight attempts at the net in the second period. Junior midfielder Matthew Eldridge (Louisville, Ky.) had three shots to pace the Panthers’ offensive effort.

Hanover vs. DePauw statistics

Hanover returns to action Sept. 5-6 in the Transylvania University (Ky.) Showcase in Lexington, Ky. The Panthers will face Belhaven College (Miss.) and Berea College (Ky.) in the two-day event.

Men's squad third in cross country poll

The Hanover College men's cross country team has been picked to finish third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this fall.

Hanover received 77 points in the HCAC's pre-season coaches' poll. The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was the unanimous choice to capture the league title, recording 100 points and all 10 first-place votes. Manchester University landed second with 90 points.

The Panthers' first race of the season will be Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Sodexo Grizzly Invitational in Shelbyville, Ind. The squad will compete in the Indiana Intercollegiates (Little State) in Terre Haute, Ind., Friday, Sept. 18.

The Heartland Conference's championship race will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, in Shelbyville, Ind.
