Panthers resume conference action with match against Manchester

HANOVER, Ind. – The Hanover men’s tennis team will return to conference action this weekend, when Manchester comes to town.

The Panthers are coming off a pair of losses to NCAA Division I and II foes Eastern Illinois and Illinois-Springfield, but won their previous conference match last Wednesday, at Mount St. Joseph, 9-0.

Hanover is currently 7-10 overall and 2-2 in HCAC play this season. The Blue and Red are also 2-2 in home matches this year, including a 1-1 mark during the spring season.

In last week’s victory over MSJ, freshman Jonathan Helmers (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up a straight set, sweep at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Helmers also teamed with freshman Mitchell Minniear (Muncie, Ind.) to take the third doubles match, 8-2.

In conference play, Helmers has a 2-2 record during singles matches. The freshman is also 5-2 overall in the No. 6 singles slot.

A pair of Panthers have 11 singles victories, including freshman Landon Carrico (New Albany, Ind.), who has solely competed in the top spot. Carrico is 11-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Sophomore Brent Barrett (New Palestine, Ind.) also has 11 singles victories, posting an 11-6 mark in the No. 2 slot. Barrett is 3-1 in the HCAC this season as well.

Hanover’s opponent, Manchester, enters the weekend with a 1-6 overall and 1-3 in HCAC matches. The Spartans were scheduled to face Bethel (Ind.) at home on Wednesday evening, but the match was postponed.

The Panthers and Spartans are slated for a 10 a.m. start time on Saturday, April 22.
