HILLSDALE, Mich. – Competing in the decathlon for the first time in his career, sophomore Joe Sheryak (Greenwood, Ind.) of the Hanover men’s track and field team set a new program record in the event at the Hillsdale Last Chance Classic Wednesday and Thursday.

Sheryak posted a two-day total of 5,620 points, placing sixth in the initial field of 11 athletes. The sophomore set four personal records, as his decathlon total is currently good enough to crack the top 50 nationally in NCAA Division III and fourth in the Great Lakes region.

Doing most of his damage on the opening day, Wednesday, Sheryak logged 3,081 points over the first five events. The sophomore set new personal records in the 400-meter dash (52.83) and the long jump (6.08m), placing fourth and fifth respectively, while earning over 600 points in each event.

Another highlight of the opening day was his first event, the 100m dash. Sheryak, who was competing in the event for the first time in his Hanover career, posted a time of 11.61 seconds, which earned him 730 points, the most of any event during his 10-leg competition.

Day Two saw him compete in three events, for the first time in his two years at HC, while also setting PR’s in the 110m hurdles and javelin throw. Sheryak clocked his first sub-17 second time at 16.96 in the hurdles, while adding a javelin toss of 38.79m. The two PR’s gave Sheryak just over 41 percent of his total Thursday.
