Women’s soccer preview: Midfielders

Daria Volker battling for possession

HANOVER, Ind. – With the team back on campus, we continue our preview series for the 2017 Hanover women’s soccer team by taking a look at the team’s midfielders.

Head coach Jim Watts will have three starting midfielders back this fall. Senior Daria Volker (Lawrenceburg, Ind.), junior Cassady Evanson (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Abby Howes (Terre Haute, Ind.) return with a great deal of experience, and will be counted upon to continue their strong play this year.

Volker and Evanson earned first team all-HCAC recognition last year with Volker also earning NSCAA 2nd Team All-Region accolades. In 17 matches a year ago, Volker scored four goals and had an assist for nine points, including the game-winning goal in overtime of last year’s NCAA opening-round win over Illinois Wesleyan.

Evanson, a second team all-HCAC pick in 2015, returns for her junior year after she scored a pair of goals and had an assist last year, while Howes started 19 matches and scored three goals.

Juniors Shannon Hawkins (Carmel, Ind.) and Claire Stockwell (Burlington, Ky.), and sophomore Brandi Brock (Cincinnati, Ohio) also saw significant action in 2016. Hawkins played in 19 matches and scored five goals. Stockwell had a goal and an assist in 11 contests, and Brock added two goals and an assist in 20 games.

Along with the returners, Hanover will have three freshmen competing for playing time in 2017 giving the Panthers both depth and experience as they look to win their fifth straight conference championship.

Hanover will play Kalamazoo (Mich.) Friday, Sept. 1 at 3:00 p.m. to start the season. The next, and final preview, will take a look at the team’s forwards.
